I mean I don’t care about Beck, I care about Schmeling. But in Beck’s defense the only champion that could be birthed in that moment was Louis. Louis-Schmeling I in 1936 wasn’t a championship fight, Schmeling was already heavyweight champion in 1930-32, and the only title fight he got after his win against Louis was his loss in 1938 against Louis that lasted 90 seconds.
Although in my defense this was the tweet that kicked this all off so that maybe incepted that misspelling into my brain at the beginning of this derail:

I don’t think that anyone disagrees that Max did some real decent stuff at the end of Joe’s life.
His history with the Nazis was likely complex. Had to be a tough spot to try and navigate and sounds like he made some positive stands.
Understanding Max better and a bit of stanning for him is fine by me. I don’t know the whole story.

My point is that there are two champions in that moment, a former champion and a future champion. Schmeling was a washed up former champion and Louis was a 10-1 favorite, up and coming future champion. If you title that scene “Birth of a Champion” it can really only refer to Louis in my opinion. It doesn’t make any sense to think that it applies to washed up former champ Schmeling.
Billy Conn lived in my neighborhood and I met him when I was a kid. The only thing I remember is that he was pleased that I knew who he was. Definitely not a Nazi.
