Someone on Reddit did the math on “Let’s Go Brandon” guy’s family business’s PPP loan

The amount of a PPP loan is approximately equal to 2.5 times the applicant’s average monthly payroll costs. In some cases, an applicant may receive a second draw typically equal to the first. The loan proceeds may be used to cover payroll costs, rent, interest, and utilities. The loan may be partially or fully forgiven if the business keeps its employee counts and employee wages stable.

PPP was $440k

Based on this information, 5 employees would equal payroll costs of $88k/$176k per month depending on if they took 1 or 2 loans. At 40 hours a week x 4, this is $110/$220 per hour per employee. An hourly rate of $110.00 equates to a weekly pay of $4,400, monthly pay of $19,067, and an annual salary of $228,800. (source) Oregon’s average salary for an electrician is $70k/year (2019). So the employees are making 3.3x or 6.6x the average salary.

If we say that 4 employees are making $70k a year ($5,830 per month x 4 = $23.3k) and the rest goes to the father/owner, then he would be making $416k per month or $4.9m per year or $2,600 per hour. (If 2 loans taken, then it is $347k per month / $4.2m per year / $2,170 per hour)

My understanding is that you could count them, but the limit of the loan for those employees was $100k annualized. If the employee made more than that, the excess salary wouldn’t count towards the calculation of the loan amount.

This is correct. For employees earning over $100K, you just base it on $100K.
