My nutjob brother in law says the election was stolen because a vote for Biden is a vote for socialism and since we are not a socialist country, that vote is invalid. So Donald J Trump won the election by 75 million votes.

This is nothing new. I’ve been arguing with people since the 1990s about whether it should be legal to vote for socialists.
Yea it’s just funny the mental gymnastics he’s using to justify the election.
If you just replace the scenes of nukes and terminators with like people doing science and medicine it’s basically a documentary on them.

This is accurate. I think the boiling frog thing makes it easier to miss, but the GOP has been rapidly becoming dumber and crazier. Bush W > Sarah Palin > Trump > MTG/Boebert/Q etc. It’s going to be fully nutjob insanity in a few more years.
I forgot how batshit insane Sarah Palin was. She seems sane compared to these other people.

She’s probably right on par with the insanity of these people, but she was smart enough to recognize that people weren’t ready to overthrow democracy in favor of a dictatorship back then. Now that’s what her entire party stands for.

Palin was ahead of the curve but also she kind of obscured how batshit crazy the mainstream wing of the party had become. If you were paying attention, even the zero-calorie Republicans like Mitt and Jeb! were pushing astonishingly hard-right ideas.

They’re different flavors, but setting up torture camps, stopping Mexicans and Muslims from coming over and a Messianic obedience to the (non Democratic) President were all established GOP ideas circa 2012.

Those things have been done throughout American history in some form or another. They are reprehensible sure, but they are not nearly as out of the mainstream as you are suggesting.
Qanon is that far out of the mainstream.
Fascist QAnon believes in batshit crazy ideas like Democratic pedophile rings and an election stolen from Trump. Hard right conservatives believe in equally batshit crazy ideas like trickle-down economics.

Thats more understandable though. A ton of mainstream politics derives from some starting with a desired conclusion (I wish my taxes were lower) and then manufacturing a rationale to support that position. The QAnon weirdos are on a whole other level of instinctive reactionary emotionally driven fantasies.
