GOP Insanity Containment 2: This is the Place. This is the Time, Cowboy.

Yeah I saw that. That is a good one. I will be impressed if it happens. It won’t make a big difference in my work, but it should be really good for lower income workers.

I guess the next step for these psychos is to make the laws retroactive so they can go after people who performed abortions in the past.

Glad you guys think the groomer attack lines are hilarious. Obviously it’s pure nonsense but will be a lot less funny when they’re rounding up registered Dems for the firing squads for pedophilia by association.

I don’t think this is right. They’re all “conservative”, but you’ve got your evangelicals and your Wall St types and your gun nuts and your Nazis, they’re a big tent in their own way. What gives them the winning edge is not that are homogeneous in their priorities, it’s that they have no qualms whatsoever about horse trading. Rich people, even if they don’t particularly care about culture war nonsense, are happy to let the loonies punch down at non-white people and LGBT+ people, etc., for their tax cuts. The culture war people are happy to hand out tax cuts and deregulation to the business types to get their institutionalized racism. Etc., etc. Meanwhile the Dem tent just fights constantly, slinging accusations of impurity and accusations of unreasonableness back and forth. The only thing ideologically consistent about the cohorts in the Republican party is that they lack any moral compass so they have no qualms about transactional deal making. Dems will sacrifice success to preserve their self images as “good people” or “the adults in the room”. The Rs just win, baby.

Republicans don’t have conflicting priorities. Different parts of the Democratic Party have conflicting priorities and only agree about not being Republicans.

I disagree. I think it is self evident that hedge fund managers in NY and poor KKK members in Alabama have different priorities. But they are happy to make an alliance to get what they want.

There’s a rough convergence about the size and shape of government. A small government that has cops and the military and lacks the power to change the status quo fits all of their priorities.

I understand that this is where the lines are drawn, which is why I self-identify as a statist and strongly oppose libertarians, but too many Democrats are squeamish about big government solutions.

I think I prefer this, because either way it’s effectively a ban and at least there won’t be any confusing law bro, “Well actually…” takes about this. Everyone will understand what SCOTUS has done.

I’m seriously considering changing my party registration at some point in the next couple of years for safety.

I don’t think this is any different than what I’m saying. You are just describing the end solution resulting from the various interests of the right negotiating a settlement where they all get what they want.

It’ll still be quite funny. If things get to that point and someone still believes in the democratic party enough to be a registered member then they’ll deserve it tbh.

CA shows that high taxes work well for funding public projects and safety net which could offset high costs of living. i don’t quite think that railing against high taxes in california is all that rational. i wouldn’t want my taxes to go lower if services around me start collapsing, although purely financially it’s counterintuitive to choose to pay higher.

of course that’s just income taxes. is there any truth that CA may be actually a low tax state on other income and/or corp taxes?

Yeah and where does all that tax money go? Lawsuits, endless bureaucracy, boondoggle projects that cost 10x more than they should, and abusive pensions.

Somehow California used to fund basically free education with much less tax revenue. Now everywhere you put that firehose of money just grows their bureaucracy and symbiotic contractor ecosystem until it absorbs all the money.

The point is that there is no configuration where various interests in the Democratic Party can all get what they care about most. Republicans can do that. Democrats can’t. Democrats can only agree on not wanting Republicans to be in control of government.
