I live a sheltered life so Idk much about these matters. Is âgender at birthâ a thing? Seems sus.
Shoplifting is a huge issue.
Most stores donât track it well nor can they. Finding out exactly what left the store for a grocery store isnât easy.
The theft in my area is as Walgreens described it. If itâs such in Winnipeg, I donât doubt areas that have been hit harder by opioids and other substance issues are worse.
Go to your local store, ask the manager or security staff the kind of theft they see. It will be like what Walgreens said initially.
Doesnât mean we need a moral panic over it, but its also reality.
Onion
Iâm sure they mean assigned gender.
Are you familiar with AFAB and AMAB?
yeah. but itâs really not⌠the stores almost definitely write off ALL losses whether damaged or misplaced as theft. also bringing up opioids is great because even the article mentions that walgreens was using shoplifting lies to distract from their losses due to their role in the opioid epidemic.
shoplifting is a convenient boogeyman to blame when corporations like walgreens and target expanded too much during boom periods and now need a reason to leave an area and to cover up managerial incompetence.
Yeah, basically this. I work for a large grocery retailer and shrink is part of the budget. Stores do inventory once or twice per year and everything is figured (what product came in the back door, what was sold through the register, and what was scanned out as loss due to damage, being out of date, etc). The remaining difference can largely be attributed to theft. Each building is still wildly profitable each year. So much so that management and corporate bonuses have been ridiculously high for years. I am part of that so itâs been great for me but the real theft issue affecting my company is the shit wages we pay associates.
I mean, the Seinfeld âitâs a write offâ isnât true. Itâs a fun Seinfeld joke, but itâs not reality.
Shrink is not theft, and itâs big, but its very incorrect to mix the two and absolutely no one is. I have absolutely no idea why you assume anyone is. Itâs not a thing.
This is just the bad version of online liberalism. We hate these big corporations! They suck! They exploit a lot of things! But the big box stores and smaller non gigantic corporations do have theft issues. Two things can be true at once.
Itâs rare to see people try to steal small amounts these days. At a grocery store the average attempted theft is probably $300 here. Personal consumption theft is rare.
Using this reality to demonize the poor, addicted or other populations is wrong. But pretending itâs not happening, or is a moral good or just a fun middle finger to wal mart when it goes well beyond that is also not good.
Did you read the article? Walgreens says that shrinkage (which includes breakage and employee theft) makes up less than 1% of their total sales.
I dont need to âgo to the store and ask security what they see.â Anecdotes are not data. The data says that shoplifting is not some huge issue in retail (at least for Walgreens) and Ive worked in accounting for two massive retailers and know that shrinkage just isnt a huge bottom line issue.
Itâs a guess. Just like the original articles you deem âmisleadingâ are.
As MCG said, theft is calculated mostly on a âhuh, guess we donât have this anymoreâ method.
1%-3% of millions is a pretty big number!
I had to look them up.
But thatâs an assignment of sex, not gender. Gender is more of a cultural construct. Sex is based on genitalia but even that isnât always so clear. Iâm just thinking itâs weird the law would based on something that isnât objective.
Itâs all performance art and grift.

The GOP really are the American taliban.
