GOP Insanity Containment 2: This is the Place. This is the Time, Cowboy.

Rep. Bob Good, a member of the hardline House Freedom Caucus, told reporters that House GOP Leader Kevin McCarthy “has not done anything to earn my vote” for speaker.

The Virginia Republican also predicted that “there will be a challenge to (McCarthy) as a speaker candidate,” a possibility that CNN first reported was under consideration by the group.

Such a challenge would be more of a protest candidate than a serious one. It would be an attempt to show McCarthy during next week’s internal GOP leadership elections that he doesn’t have the floor votes for speaker, in hopes of forcing him to the negotiating table.

Meanwhile, Rep. Chip Roy of Texas told reporters that “no one currently has 218” votes for speaker, which is the magic number McCarthy would need to secure the speaker’s gavel on the House floor in January.

The House Freedom Caucus has been meeting all day for its new member orientation, where their strategy in the leadership fight has come up, according to a source familiar with the conversations.

McCarthy has spent the last two days working the phones and has been hearing out potential holdouts and critics, but so far not making promises or caving into their hardline demands, sources said.

I mean I’d go so far as to say its >50% chance they rally around DeSantis, somehow dumping Trump, and roll into 2024 with all of us as pessimistic as we were two days ago (hopefully we are wrong again)

The crazies almost all losing is a big help for saving democracy. Also the house being so close reduces the chances they go full coup / don’t certify 2024. Huge wins.

garrison definitely has a soft spot for fetterman

GWB was happy to leave public life and paint silly pictures. This way he left it to others to define his legacy to a certain extent. Trump is not going to stop being Trump.

Welcome to the county where I grew up. This is Butler County, Ohio. As soon as I heard the call letters of the station I was like, “oh, it’s outside of Hamilton!” and I was right. of course.

It’s always been the rurals vs the townies, ever since I was a kid.

It’s been a matter of time for a few years now.

It’s only a matter of time before it happens to an elected Democrat.

Didn‘t it happen to Gabby Giffords ten years ago?

I’m salty that people complained and my post was hidden when I speculated about it happening to a Democratic politician to switch control of Congress if the margin is one.

Is Jan 6 done by the outgoing or incoming congress?

I think the big difference is that in 2011 Loughner was an outlier with clinical psychosis. Now the guy who shot his neighbor for being a Democrat likely has a worldview that is much more mainstream, in line with millions to tens of millions of other Americans and several members of Congress.

Every “Republicans are self destructing” take has to be weighed against the reality that their opponents are still the milquetoast eDem losers they were a week ago. Whatever opening the Republicans leave with their infighting is going to see the Dems trip over their own shoelaces before they capitalize on it.

We should celebrate that democracy apparently has lived to fight another day, but its still a fight. And eDems aren’t great at fighting.
