Can we do a gofundme to buy out nant’s contract
It’s possible that was the single most profitable sporting event in history. Likely worth hundreds of millions for Matsayama.
I mean, maybe. I don’t exactly have my finger on the pulse of Japanese golf, but even considering only golf events, he’s got to at least pass the earnings of Tiger’s first Masters win first, and that’s no small hurdle.
Probably one of the great collapses in Masters history if Xylophone Snickerdoodle doesn’t chunk it in the water at 16.
Apparently Mayweather made 280 million for his fight against Conor McGregor (I know pure insanity right). That was my first thought.
lol wow. I mean, I’m not an expert at valuing sporting events (like that fight), but I know enough to at least know this would have some high hurdles that it’s not guaranteed to overcome. It could? Maybe? Anything is possible, but I’m not crowning his ass before seeing some data.
Without a pinky to the mouth, I don’t believe him.
I wouldn’t say golf is huge in Japan like it used to be in the 80s, but Matsuyama winning a major is absolutely a huge deal here, and his status as a Japanese sports hero is solidified for life from today.
I heard the billion dollar number being thrown around yesterday. First Japanese male to win The Masters will make him an instant hero in Japan. Sponsorship deals will be endless.
Naomi Osaka’s done OK here with sponsorship deals (she’s the world’s highest-paid female athlete), and she’s “only” half-Japanese.
However, even by Japanese standards Hideki doesn’t exactly exude personality. He’ll do fine, but I’ll bet Japanese fans secretly wish it was the much more charismatic Ryo Ishikawa, not Hideki, who had become their golf savoir.
Exactly. He’s not the type to seek attention. But we need to draw a distinction between media attention and public attention.
Japan has a number of tabloid sports dailies that are desperate to report any piece of juicy celebrity gossip they can get their hands on.
But the public at large isn’t as golf obsessed as they once were, or as the world outside of Japan seems to believe, so it isn’t like Matsuyama has Tiger-like attention wherever he goes here. Though who knows, that could change after his Masters win.
Had no idea this existed. Pretty amusing.
Was terrible off the tee but managed to almost salvage a reasonable round. I’m happy with anything sub 40 here, so this will have to do. Playing Willow Creek tomorrow morning with a neighbor. Almost certain I’ll be forced to take a cart so that sucks…but it’s still golf!
Man I just played an absolutely brutal motherfucker of a round. First there is this high pressure system that just hit and the winds picked up to 20mph gusting much higher - they’d knock you a little off balance. Ofc almost the entire front 9 is into the wind. Got out of there +13 somehow despite being +10 after 4 holes.
It was so windy that if you were chipping into the wind it’d still slap it down into the ground. Gnarly.
Then the wind completely died on the back going the other way of course - then the heat started. Almost 100 degree temps which just sapped me in the back but I held on and finished with a 94 despite some unfortunate doubles. Birdied my absolute worst and least favorite hole on the course, a dogleg left 400 yard par 4 that has branches overhanging on the tee box which forces you to try to hit a draw or hook around them. I ofc sliced off the tee and left myself about 205 and hit this really pissy, miraculous shot to about 10 feet and made it. That slowed the bleeding enough to make a decentish finish.
Was blasting my 3 hybrid and 5 iron today. The longer clubs felt better in my hands - my wedges were trash. I was alternating between a high cut and this low draw. Didn’t seem to be any rhyme or reason to it. The wedges were where a lot of the score went, and some unfortunate 3 putting. That is the happiest I’ll ever be with a 94 lol.
Anyone listen to this?
In it he proposes a new scoring system for golf for non pros which I think is pretty genius. Instead of scoring shots to par you get points based on a holes outcome. It focuses on trying to hit heroic shots. I am going to use this for this season.
15 point for eagle
8 points for birdie
3 points for par
1 point for bogey.
