Today I learned that it’s a two stroke penalty to ask someone what club they used. It’s like they are trying to get people to cheat.
But you are allowed to peer into their bag after they select a club to figure out what club is missing from the bag–and thus, which one they are using.
LOOPHOLE
High school golf we played on some really crappy courses so teams would usually agree to play “improve your lie”. Any divot, bare dirt, loose rocks etc you could move your ball like 6 inches to a reasonable place to hit.
Unfortunately, we were so bad our running joke was: shoot an 8, lie we scored 7, then “Improve our Lie” and write down a 6. (Par 3)
I do think there is something to that for crappy normie courses. Getting unlucky and finding a terrible lie due to poor maintenance/course quality feels punitive sometimes.
Of course there is. It’s just common sense to play from a lie absent course abnormalities.
I agree 100% with the sentiment but I bet we have all played with folks who are militant nits vis a vis playing it as it lies. Certainly it’s probably 3:1 cheaters to nits representing 60% of the folks I’ve played with :)
This week is the Waste Management. Not as many drunken fans as normal so it definitely feels different watching it. 16 would be cool to play with the stands up. And 17 looks like a fun hole, but otherwise this course doesn’t really do it for me.
I’ve always thought going to this tournament on Thursday/Friday then going to Vegas for Super Bowl weekend would be a blast. Maybe I’m getting old but that doesn’t really sound too appealing anymore.
I’m sure if you’re reading this thread then you’ve seen this but it’s worth posting and watching again because it’s so awesome. Gary Woodland seems like a legitimately good person.
I’d love to go to the Waste Management. What better way to spend a weekend in February than getting drunk at a rowdy golf tournament, soaking up the sun and having a blast.
Making my grand return tomorrow. O/U score is like 105
Jordan Spieth sighting near the top of the leaderboard.
shot low 90’s, played pretty unbelievable for the first 8 holes and then something happened where I just couldn’t hit the ball and it was like the before times.
But all in all it was a victorious day because I nuked a drive on the 4th hole, which is the toughest hole and the narrowest fairway - ob left, river on the entire right side, only about 35 yards wide. I hit one right down the middle to the end of the fairway. By far the longest drive of my life and even as it came off the club I yelled “holy shit!”
Left me about 120 to an elevated approach and I stuck a 9 iron to about 8 feet and made the putt. That hole is like an automatic double bogey for me even on a good day. I think that was enough to put me back into this again.
What’s funny about that drive is I choked way up on it, about an inch and a half. I think I should get this club trimmed down a bit, it feels too long. but it’s good to know I can actually hit this thing.
Spieth GOAT, so entertaining.
Shot a 36 on a par 32 back 9 at a local beginner’s course. That was with a double bogey on 18 where I got kind of ripped off, i hit the fringe but it took a weird bounce off a sprinkler or something and I ended up in a hard packed dirt ditch and ofc bladed the shit out of the chip. My touch around the greens was nuts other than that mistake, was sticking every chip to 1-3 feet. Made a putt from the rough from 15 feet as well to save a par.
I was not hitting the ball incredibly well but good enough. I hit the green on the only tricky hole of the course, a 180 yard par 3 with water right and OB left, pretty much no miss but short. I hit a laser of a 5 iron that didn’t get more than 10 feet off the ground but it landed about 20 yards short and rolled on.
Driver slicing again but still kept it in the fairway. I recorded my swing at the range - i’m looking way over the top, so I gotta work on that. 2 major things - weight transfer (i tend to stay on my back heel and step out of the swing like I’m playing baseball) and swing path. Everything else feels and looks decent to me.
I’m too self conscious to post a video, but maybe I will
Hit the range today, lucky it was warm cause I was forced to hit in an non enclosed bay, half the range was closed so guys could collect balls in the snow, lol. Been dealing with shoulder issues in both arms, right is pretty bad, can’t do club windmills with it or put it on the headrest while I drive, haha. Rotator cuff??? Thankfully, it does NOT hurt swinging a club, otherwise I’d need mental health help.
Good session overall. Started with partial wedges. Did the 'ol stiff and straight, arms glued to me no hinge thingy and it was working. Good contact and most shots went straight or slightly left of where I was aiming.
Irons were pretty good but I really need to find the sweet spot with swing speed. Too slow and I chunk and flare right, too fast and I get ahead of myself and yank it straight left. But I did flush a few.
Woods and hybrids were the star, I really focused on easy swinging and it worked. 4h, 7w, 5w…didn’t matter, I was really slappin’ 'em out there. It’s almost as if I can’t swing easy enough, slower I swung, the better I hit them! Not sure about distance but it was probably close to normal.
Driver was Ok, tho I was tired by this point. Tried to swing easy but forgot for a stretch. Also hate the sound it makes when I hit the rubber tee but no excuses, I was mediocre at best.
Hit a few super tired 9i with balls I stole out of the snow right in front of me to end things, it did not go well, lol.
Leave for Florida 3/28. I, as well as my parents will be fully vaccinated. Really looking forward to it, hope Dad is healthy so we can play a ton. He’s been playing here and there but is a mess physically. He’s only playing occasionally and upset about shooting an 83 when it could’ve been a 79. I’d kill for that so he’ll get no sympathy from me.
Tiger Woods apparently in a bad car accident.
Sounds like he’s probably ok but yikes.
The video of the vehicle on CNN is pretty ugly.
Some local radio guy is talking about a bizarre TV appearance over the weekend? Chances he relapsed? I’m hoping not as it sounds like this could be career ending or worse.
Apparantly he is in surgery.
