Golf: No Bones, just Bonesaws

the advice to shorten up chuck’s swing was good. I shorten up my swing too when struggling and it really works. You only lose like 10 yards off perfect contact, and if you’re hitting it better with the short swing, you might actually pick up yards.

Last round of the year in the northeast yesterday, course had no teeth, all the tee boxes were up, clean and place, etc. But still, first ever 78. Sort of counts.

You never know how child prodigies will evolve, but with that swing, that pedigree, that coach, and that practice area in his backyard, I wouldn’t bet against Charlie growing up to be amazing.

Charlie hype is real but these stories rarely end well.

How about that drive just now on the par 5? Takes on the bunker, smokes it, and turns around and gives dad the thumbs up back on the back tee before it even lands. Pops just picks it up and doesn’t even bother.

And the trash talk to JT was great. For those not watching, Charlie almost drove the green and JT put it in a bunker on the right, it’s a slight dogleg right to left. Charlie gets up there first and leaves a note in the bunker by JT’s ball that says “DRAW HOLE!”

Played a few times at my course when weather cooperated, was too lazy to post. Made 2 late season changes based off video tips I randomly came across. First one was with partial wedges, which had slowly devolved to shit since adding wrist hinge to my swing. Now I keep my arms straight and stiff, no hinge, just go back and turn my body through the shot with them glued to the side of my chest. So far it’s working great!! Stuck several from 40-80yds out to gimme distance last time I played a regular course. Even got compliments from the 2 randoms I was paired with.

2nd tip was about correcting OTT, which I suffer greatly with. I didn’t totally understand the tip and I’m not 100% I’m actually doing it but I think it was about starting the arms in the downswing a hair before turning the body through the shot. Yesterday was my first time trying it and the results were pretty good, hit most of my shots dead straight or slight fade. Can’t wait to work on both of these more next season.

Also got this for $200 shipped to try over the winter. Sensor can be attached to regular clubs if you have the room to swing, I do not unfortunately. If it sucks I’ll ship it back.

Long-drive champ Kyle Berkshire is going to take a shot at playing professional golf. He’s about a +4 handicap right now so it might not be that far-fetched:

Here he is hitting an 8-iron 302 yards, nothing special:

Played 18 here after a half day at work, only kept score first time around. Was shit off the tee but it don’t matter if you get up and down from everywhere! 80yds, 40yds, just off the green, didn’t matter, I just did the damn thing. Played with 2 neighbors I ran into randomly at the 1st tee, one is our club champ. He was in disbelief of my short game, hell I was too, lol. Hope to play a couple more rounds before the cold weather comes back but rain may kill that.

Need a new carry bag, my Callaway hyperite is starting to go. Can’t decide if I should just get another one or go with a fancier (and heavier) sun mountain type bag with 14 dividers and more storage. Price isn’t too much of a factor, still hard to decide which type I want and there’s so many options.

I got a Sun Mountain with individual dividers this summer and I love it, I had an Ogio and this is a much nicer bag. Even with the dividers it still feels very light, I haven’t walked with it on my shoulders though I always use a push cart.

I spent an inordinate amount of time over the last couple months trying to figure out a new bag to buy without being able to go test them out. My last bag started to rip this year and the stand broke. It lasted me nearly 10 years and was a Callaway so I went with another one from them.

I generally use a pushcart instead of carry so I was considering getting a much bigger 14 way divider bag but I wanted to keep my carrying options open. In my research I determined that they’re pretty much all the same. Almost all bags have full length dividers now but make sure you get that. Otherwise just decide how many dividers and pockets you want and color. You can’t really make a bad choice.

I’ve had this one less than 2 years and it’s still technically ok despite getting a ton of action. One of the fiberglass spines in the front splintered and was coming out so I just pulled it out. Just mildly annoying pulling my wedges or putter out of the front divider. Some euro company (Big Max) makes a pretty nice one similar to sun mountain bag, called the dri lite hybrid. Both look bulky but only weigh 1.5lbs more than the current bag. Maybe I’ll stop by the PGA Superstore near work sometime but early in the day when it’s quiet and try some out.

9 holes of on course practice in the wind and cold. It was not fun. But it was fun!!
