My irons keep going directly right. How do I fix this?
Do they arc /slice right? Or is it just a straight shot that goes right in trajectory? How far right in degrees?
If it’s a straight shot that just goes off to the right then you are probably closer to a great swing than you think. I had a straight shot that went about 30 degrees right when I started. This type of ball flight means your club face is square to the path (Inside out most likely which is what you want) but open to the target. Basically, to fix that you need to get your wrists involved so they’re squaring the club face to the target - much easier said than done. The most common cause of not doing this is gripping the club way too tight. If you grip too tight it’s impossible to get your wrists around properly and your club face is gonna be wide open a lot. I have this problem really bad in my downswing - when I grip the club like im holding an egg (no joke) i produce much better and straighter shots.
This is where I wish I sought lessons, because in trying to fix this I developed a really gnarly out to in motion to try to work the ball left and that’s why I slice now.
Edit: im assuming you’re a rightie
Decent golf clubs and fitting are pretty important. One sport where equipment matters imo.
I don’t play a Callaway driver, but have ordered a bunch form Callawaypreowned if you’re looking to get something used/cheaper. Everything I’ve got from them has been at least, if not above the quality they list it at.
But would totally recommend to get yourself fitted properly once you’re happy where your swing is. I tinker with my D/3w/hybrid a bunch in terms of loft/lie when at the range. I think I’m pretty happy with the recent results, so I’ll stick with what I’ve got for now.
This is what I want:
But $300 tho. Probably could save money with a cheaper shaft. I just cant/wont buy a big purchase like a driver online though.
I did spend $250 on my cobra hybrid and its by far the best purchase I ever made, I don’t doubt a driver would feel the same way. I’ll look on that callaway site for some good used beginner/anti-slice drivers.
I think the reason I like this taylormade is all the weight is in the back of the club, so it feels almost like swinging my hybrid, which is very rear-weighted as well.
Others may disagree but the shaft is 10x more important than the clubhead.
I agree here. Pretty much every new clubhead is gonna have the same hot face, it’s just a matter of look/confidence. Because you swing a driver faster, the correct flex/weight on the shaft is super important.
I have currently gone back to an old Cleveland HiBore XLS driver from 2008 because I am just flat hitting it better, straighter and longer than my 2 year old TM driver. I am convinced that the shaft is the reason why. I am half tempted to try and get a new version of the same shaft (Fujikura Fit-On M Gold don’t remember the exact specs off the top of my head) or something with identical specs and put it in my newer driver to see if that helps.
Insert penis joke
I was thinking of going to senior flex shafts for a while when my club speed was in the mid 70’s but now I do that speed with my irons and i’m comfortably around 95-100mph finally on driver.
For shafts I like graphite but I kind of think all graphite shafts are created more or less equal. Am i way off? The shafts on my irons were like $40 each. That seems absurd to me. It can go as high as $100 too.
It is more about finding the shaft that fits your swing speed/ball flight imo. I would recommend going to a club fitting and they will be able to tell you better than any of us what is best for you.
A big part of having the right shaft is also getting good feedback on your mishits imo.
I got that cobra fmax airspeed driver today. Hitting it pretty well - it does definitely have a pull/draw bias but i still managed to slice.
I think I fucked up though. I got an 11.5 degree loft instead of 9.5 and my drives are going really high - too high I think. I might go trade it back in for a 9.5.
It made its debut at my worst hole on any course, #15 at my local par 59. It’s only 330 but it’s uphill, the right side has forest and a lake, and everything slopes to the right. On top of that its an elevated approach guarded by a massive bunker in the front, with absolutely no shot if you miss anywhere else.
I drove one to about 140 out and hit the green and got my second par ever on it. It’s a sign.
I played 9 holes and got 6 pars and 6/9 GIR which is absolutely insane for me. Unfortunately… the other holes were triples
DJ is -11 through 11 today
What’s really crazy is scheffler shot -12 today which I’m pretty sure is some kind of record and it’s not gonna be the story at all today.
I actually had work to do today on a Friday so I just turned this on. They are tearing apart this course. I woulda thought for a playoff event wouldn’t have a cut of -3 but haven’t really looked or remembered years past
Playing today I find I do better without a practice swing. Just go up there and golf.
Played my annual round of golf in Japan. I was so out of form and played the first few holes so poorly that it was pointless to keep score, although I started to regain my feel on the back side.
Some pictures:
Finally shot a decent round here after numerous 43+ rounds I was too ashamed to post, lol. Went around a 2nd time but stopped at 7 when I ran into backed up 3somes. Was tired and out of water anyways.
Hit a bunch of extra shots and experimented with a baseball type grip with fairway woods, hit 'em pretty good. Did the same with a few Drivers, no bueno so I’ll stick to interlocking there.
I played 90 holes last week into this weekend. Playing well, definitely figured something out because some of my shots are drawing now.
However I suffer from a severe chunk on my long irons and hybrids. It only happens like 10-20% of the time but enough to be really shitty when it happens. I think I’m moving my head during my weight transfer. Idk how to fix it.
Tomorrow’s a big day - playing 9 holes on a pretty long (for me) 3500 yards front 9 early before work.I’m playing with/against a guy who i honestly dont like very much and always tries to give me unwarranted swing tips and he’s terrible. He loved that hes 60+ and outdrives me.
I hope the driver’s booming tomorrow and i keep my shanks low. But am worried because i’m putting pressure on myself i’m just setting myself up for disaster. Gonna try to just take it one shot at a time, because my short game’s been so solid lately. I just need to get it near the green and I’m good. Been practicing my 30-50 yard pitch shots because i cant reach these 400+ yard par 4’s in even close to two shots sometimes. Here goes nothing
I’ve went to the range 4 times in the last 7 days. My iron game is pretty solid, hitting consistenly straight for 80-130 yards. My driving game is still rough though. I can’t seem to fix this crazy slice. If I could get hit it straight and 150 yards every time I would be happy.
I’ve been going 3-4 times a week for the last couple months. Not sure if you watched the video I posted upthread, but here are a couple things that have helped me fix my slice.
-
Strong Grip. Discussed in the video. Easiest thing to fix.
-
Shortening my backswing. I’ve been crushing my irons (straight) by substantially shortening my backswing. I haven’t perfected the driver, but I can carry 220 straight or with a slight draw with a pretty short backswing.
-
Keeping my elbows close to my body. I went to the range with my dad today and he was hitting the driver the best I’ve ever seen. He has been working on keeping his elbows, specifically his right elbow, close to his body on the backswing. This promotes a swing path that will draw the ball.
I played last Wednesday and shot a 51-49. Of course, my 63 year old father shot a personal best 2 over 74 the prior week. I can probably get back to scoring in the mid 80s if I start playing consistently, but it’s just now getting mild enough (90-95 with similar heat index) to play.
