Played yesterday with the wife. She had a rough going of it with a 103. Though it was only her 3rd time out this year so we’ll cut her some slack. Admittedly it is a pretty tough course- lots of up and down, tons of fescue just off the fairway, a few forced carries, and pretty quick greens.
I had a disappointing 87. Had 3 lost balls that I hit into red-staked hazards on 3 of the 4 par fives but still made par on all three. Ugh. Two penalties were from drives that were smoked but just slightly curving too much that hit a pretty solid slope, cascading out. Another was a hybrid from the middle of the fairway like 215 out that went right of the green, rolled across the cart path into a small stream/wet area.
Lol if i shoot 87 its a fantastic day worth celebrating :)
Playing twice this weekend. I’m hitting way more greens in regulation the last few times I’ve gone out so I am really curious to see how I do this weekend.
Tomorrow I have off and I’m going to make an effort to practice putting for an hour. My make % inside 5-10 feet is not what it should be. If i get that number up, i’m gonna be invincible. I rarely have a chip or pitch inside 20 yards that is outside 10 feet, my wedges are pretty white hot.
Oh I was pleased as it’s a tough course but could have been so much better. I only really had one bad hole. Looking at my handicap card it’s my 3rd lowest round out of my last 20, so it is a good score. Always wanting more though.
Took another day off tomorrow so I’ll be back out there hacking away.
Tour average from 5-10 feet is 55% so you’re probably doing better than you think.
Oh man, thanks for the invite! But I don’t think I can convince the wifey to let me abandon her two days in a row while she’s stuck inside. The course I’m playing tomorrow is a solid hour+ drive for me so I’ll be gone all day. Possible meetup at like CT National later in the year though?
Also, not sure if anyone was watching The US Am just now but I’m sure it will be talked about. Round of 16, match was all square on 18. One guy just off the green, one guy in the bunker. Dude’s caddy went into the bunker, very clearly tested the sand with his hand. When the opposing caddy called him out on it and got a rules official, the caddy in the wrong lied about touching the sand. Guy in the bunker lost the hole due to the caddy’s penalty. Apparently the caddy is a local to Bandon. Dude is never gonna work again, if not for the mistake, but for lying about it.
Shot a 72 on a 3500 yard par 59 today. Not my best round there, but I was absolutely shanking the shit out of the ball for the last 12 holes so a lot of my bogeys were actually up and downs. Saved a lot of strokes by making my 4-5 footers of which i had a ton today. Easily made like 80 feet of putts today.
Probably the best my short game has ever been and i barely noticed it, it felt really natural.
I birdied twice which is a record for me there and almost aced the third hole. Literally about 3 inches from going in. Only one double which i totally earned but saved it from a triple with a good chip.
In high school/college we played a par 3 late night that had lights. Like 1300 yards. Obv had to drink 1beer per hole which turned into great fun/gambling.
The course you played was a bit longer but those are fun to play and work on your game.
Had to google Heartland. I’m not a Long Islander but by the looks of it, if you’ve played there you know the type of place I’m talking about. Hitting off mats, pounding beers, making a jerk about yourself while waging too much money that you don’t have as a 20 year old.
Thinking about golf/gambling- I always like Jordan’s comment on it about he would play for anything that made you uncomfortable. When gambling on golf it absolutely has a real affect on one’s game.
I’ve actually never played it but have hit balls at the range there during winter in the heated stalls, the balls automatically pop up on a tee after each swing which is pretty neat. Keep saying I’ll play a night round there but I play so damn much living on an executive that I’ve never got around to it.
My friend gave me an ancient taylormade r580 driver, which made its debut in 2003, when I was 14 and still very much a virgin.
I was using a Strata (lol) driver from my original beginner club set i bought for $200. The $200 was driver to wedge plus a putter and a bag. So yea, it was a cheap piece of crap.
Holy shit i was bombing drives today with this taylormade antique. Even my big slices are advancing 210-220. I got ahold of a few that went 260+ and one accidental draw that nearly went 300. I’ve never even hit a draw with my driver before, it was super strange.
It’s cut about an inch shorter than my strata which always felt way too fucking long. The sound it makes is tremendous and has that old school titanium sound.
Because I want to get fitted properly and my swing isn’t there yet. Maybe it never will be.
Very close to just getting a generic slice reducer type of driver and calling it a day. I am a natural fader of the ball but my consistent miss is a slice. I can play the slice on most courses but i’m losing 50 yards each time it happens.
I mean you could just buy a used 5 year old taylormade/callaway/ping for $100-$150 so you at least have something decent to hit while you work on your swing. Once you feel ready then splurge for something more high end
That’s not a bad idea. I’m blown away by how much yardage i picked up from switching to this club, modern drivers probably add another 10-15 yards
Sometimes though it’s all about confidence - I feel really confident standing above the ball with this club. I don’t know why. The sound it makes i love too, even off center hits sound like you absolutely striped it.
there were 2 sets of footprints in the sand-trap, then suddenly only one. Golf Jesus, why did you leave me? Son, holes 4 through 7, I carried you errrr
