It’s weird how good this type of sandwich is (pastrami, Montreal smoked meat ect) given how simple it is and how it sort of breaks all the culinary rules. It’s one texture, one flavour, and not a lot of contrast but it’s still somehow perfection!
And it’s weird because if served cold it’s just generic.
Heat has no flavor but serve pastrami at room temperature and it doesn’t make it out of the first round.
Cheeseteak is massively overrated.
I disagree. A good cheesesteak is very simple no doubt but man is it a great comfort food.
Cheesesteaks annoy me when they overcomplicate it. It’s 3 ingredients and 1 of them is optional. Stop putting weird ass stuff on it.
I think there’s a distinction between a good solid everyday “what am I having for lunch?” sandwich and an “event” sandwich. I mean maybe some people are tossing together a cheesesteak for lunch every day, but I doubt that’s common.
Also, where I grew up what we’re calling a cheesesteak was a steak and cheese grinder.
There’s something wrong with the world when a Reuben falls before a “chopped cheese” sandwich. Something no one outside NYC had heard of a couple years ago. And, frankly, something that wants to be a cheesesteak but they only keep ground beef in the walk-in.
You grew up in a gay bar?
I’ve admittedly only eaten one Reuben, but it was at a quality restaurant that I liked every other meal at, and…woof. Haven’t found the motivation to try again since I doubt it was just a bad one or something.
Reuben is another sandwich that isn’t a regular sandwich. Often served open-face, often eaten with knife and fork. Simply adding bread does not a sandwich make.
IMO this is part of the reason the cubano is so strong. It’s “special” but does not sacrifice convenience.
Frankly I’ve given up ordering a Reuben at a place I don’t know. I think 90% of the places that put it on the menu don’t actually like them and have zero clue how to make one and the cook just fills it with spite.
Case in point:
I hated voting French dip versus Reuben. So close for me.
Didn’t vote for Montreal mostly because I already voted for pastrami, this round. Plus I like a cubano
A lot of this for me factors on my youth and what sandwiches I have a fond memory of. My mom also made a great egg salad but I also loved pastrami deli sandwiches as a yute. Was pretty close for me.
I would order a meatball sub pretty much anywhere. It’s like the pizza of sandwiches in terms of potential satisfaction.
Yeah take the roll and replace it with some pasta!
A Reuben is very much a proper sandwich. Anyone serving it open face is doing it wrong.
I like a Reuben, but I get why people hate it, the 1000-Island dressing is tough to get past.
That’s because thousand Island on a Reuben is criminal. Has to be Russian dressing.
I don’t think I’ve ever had a chopped cheese. I kind of want to try one now, but seems like the sort of thing I should skip breakfast for.
