Getting Older

Now that you mention it, I have experienced that on rural roads! Thankfully it is mostly city and highway driving.

I’ve been using rogaine for 25 years and my bald/thin spot is much less prominent than all the other men on my mom’s side of the family, which is supposedly where you get it.

The temples supposedly aren’t as affected by it, but I still put some there for good measure.

I look like a psychopathic killer with a shaved head.

?

More like this. And throw in some Mitch McConnell if I shave my beard.

Just yesterday saw a Japanese TV show about a French guy (living in Japan) who went to Turkey to get a hair transplant. He had just gotten it and looked like a close buzz cut. But then they visited him 6 months later and sure enough, a full head of fluffy hair. Said he went there because the cost was half of that of Japan.

And totally unrelated, suddenly my wife is nagging me to take a trip to Turkey.

It almost certainly works to some extent even if “works” means losing hair more slowly than you otherwise would have (which is going to be impossible to appreciate).

A lot of the rich hair transplants look like garbage (john cena, DN’s is too straight at the front it’s too obvious) that one rich guy who takes like 200 pills a day to slow aging his hair doesn’t look good either.

My hair started going a few years ago, it’s probably finally time to buzz it and see how that looks. For me it just bam there it goes. Maybe I should’ve tried to stop or slow it but whatever. in the meantime I’ll just wear the dad hat. I am not going with the ugly looking comb over in public that looks awful.

my dad’s side was bald not my mom’s and the rest mostly looks like her side, this is rigged.

don’t really want to shave it every whatever days that is. ugh

Damn it, now you’ve got me started down a road.

using this cane for the last few weeks full-ish time has been a growth experience. people are seriously so insanely rude and it’s probably not a huge secret I’m pretty mercurial and can be caustic towards rude people in public, but my god, i legitimately almost snapped on a few people. it is under no circumstances acceptable to say the following things to ANYONE, let alone a stranger you dont know:

“what happened to you? oh, you seem fine”
“whats with the cane?”
“whats wrong with you?”

finally culminated in a situation where i had both free and cane hand kind of full with groceries, asshole boomer leaving the store takes what looked like half a glance back at me and lets the door slam in my face. even if i didnt have a cane that would have elicited a “thanks, ahole” from me on some days but I just muttered something like “jesus fucking christ” and he heard it, turned around and said something weird regarding the cane i didnt fully hear, at this point i think i normally wouldve gone nuclear but i just put both arms out like in an exasperated way and stared at him til he waddled away.

i never really thought about it before, my dad always had to use a cane, and i dont remember any specific incidents other than him always remarking he hated how people treated him when he used it so he shirked it (to his great detriment too).

like its simply none of your fucking business, lol. dont get me started on people at the gym, either

Surprised all the hair stuff got talked about without mentioning Finasteride/Propecia. It’s basically free now as a generic and does a good job slowing hair loss. My entire family is bald and I started taking that stuff at like 26 when I started showing signs of hair loss (and still do at 43) and have a full head of hair. If you aren’t too far down the road to baldness I would recommend at least trying it.

Yeah I think I likely waited too long on that front. Probably started showing about ten years ago now, but the majority was always at the crown so I didnt pay much attention, but its slowly eating its way to the front and Im starting to get major Ted from Scrubs vibes (not full bald on top but fewer and fewer strands across the middle each week)

At the first sign of thinness I got on the finasteride/minoxidil train and continue to have a full head of hair 4 years later.

It has worked very effectively for me.

Any deal-breaking side effects from either? My thinning is slow and gradual and I’m pretty damn happy for how much I have left at 53, but I wouldn’t mind heading it off at the pass.

None in my experience. I think there may be some libido side effects in corner cases, but it’s rare.

I went through Hims. Made account, photographed top of head, described issue in online form, approved in like 2 hours. Meds are on auto-renew, too.

No clue what Hims is charginf but Sams Club will charge you $4/month fof 1mg finasteride.

Well, the Social Security Administration is still up and running as of a few days ago and my benefit application has been approved. So that’s good.

The timeline was not quite as advertised but whatever. I submitted my application mid-January. The SSA says 80% of people are currently being approved within 2 weeks of applying. In my case it took about 8 weeks for them to even start a review of my application but following that it was approved within a few days. I got three emails over the 8 weeks telling me to check my account but each time there wasn’t any actual change in status. Fourth time was the charm. So, great.

Benefits for a given month are actually paid the next month though, so it will be a while before I know if Elon is going to pay me or not.

@nunnehi thanks for asking. And bc I might have ignored that last SSA email for a good while otherwise.

The effect on my body of being on my feet for 4+ hours is too damn high.

Yeah, that is difficult to fake if you are doing a lot of sitting down. Nothing really prepares you for being on your feet for extended periods of time other than being on your feet a lot…
