Where is all this saturated fat coming from? I thought these were made from peas or whatever.
coconut and palm oil
I’ve been stanning for sweets pretty hard and I like pastries quite a bit but they aren’t getting past burgers. Versatile, easy, and comforting all in one delicious package.
I also read that some vegan is suing because they are made on the same grill top as the regular burgers
good luck with your trial by jury sir
I tried an impossible whopper and thought it was gross. I also had burps all night that were vaguely reminiscent of peanut butter.
I really hate the fake meat thing. Just make good vegetable dishes and stop trying to pretend they’re something else. I mean, how hard would it be for a fast food chain to offer falafel?
I really like the fake ground beef from Trader Joe’s.
Meat substitute food for vegans is vapes for people who can’t give up smoking.
For people who don’t want to eat meat but who prefer its appearance to vegetables?
jackfruit is amazing. One of my biggest issues with tofu and its ilk is texture, and jackfruit solves that issue. Perfect pulled pork or chicken substitute.
As for meat…we have a vegan fast food place here that has their own recipe for “burgers” and it is 100x better than Impossible or Beyond. I wish they’d market it outside the restaurant.
America needs fast food Indian restaurants.
Weird I think slimy jackfruit texture is gross and tofu is great. Fresh jackfruit is good and I will eat and enjoy the frozen jackfruit yellow curry from Trader Joe’s but i can’t see using the canned stuff ever.
okra is delicious
When you get home from the grocery store, chuck 3 or 4 blocks of firm (!) tofu in the freezer. Stick it on the counter the morning you want to eat it for dinner to thaw. Crack that baby open ‘round 6pm and squeeze out the water that would have been in there otherwise. Cut into squares and then fry in a pan with some oil for a crispy tasty treat. Add to stir fry; cover in BBQ sauce and eat with rice; douse in some tahini-based sauce if ya feelin’ fancy. It also lasts forever in the freezer.
This is the hack I’ve been looking for to get crispier fried tofu, huh?
It’s going to change your life.
I think there are two categories. You’ve got stuff like a portobello mushroom burger whose goal is to just be a burger with a non meat filling. It’s not intended (I don’t think) to taste like meat. It’s just intended to be something plant-based that can go into a burger and taste good. I find lots of things like that taste good.
Then there is stuff like Beyond Meat and Impossible burgers whose goal is to taste like meat. I find those lacking, because they just don’t taste as good as what they’re trying to emulate .
I suppose both are better than eating meat for ethical reasons. But only the former has a chance of being something I want to eat (and sometimes actually is).

Actually I think portobello mushrooms specifically are used this way because they do emulate meat, to a degree. They’re like a big umami patty with a texture that’s a lot closer to a steak than it is to other vegetables.
I just think it tastes like a portobello mushroom. I do fucking love mushrooms. I guess I don’t really think of them as vegetables since they’re not plants either.
I guess that may be someone’s intention (hence the qualifier in my prior post), but my taste buds don’t really perceive it that way. That could just be a me thing.
I just picked that because that’s the one I’ve eaten most recently. I had a good spicy bean patty burger last year which tasted prettay good. Didn’t taste like meat at all.
Quick suggestion to make this a little bit of a game. We should make this like an NCAA bracket pool once we get into the round of 16 and everyone submits their bracket to someone.
