Jeez, man how many times have you seen that movie? ;) And it’s patently ridiculous to think there would be an escalating series of attacks here. Yeah, that happened. The premise was ridiculous, and it holds up extremely poorly just thinking about it. But, yeah, I totally forgot a lot of that plot obviously.
That was totally play it and forget it material for me, and it didn’t really feel like an anti-torture movie at the time at all.
It made an impression on me when I first saw it (16-17 at the time), but for sure 3-4 rewatches over the years. Bruce Willis is awful but Denzel is great, I liked Annette, Tony Shalhoub has a nice small role, the bad guy is also pretty good.
The last act of the movie is all about Denzel being not cool with torture, I’d put this in spoilers but I think I already spoiled everything lol.
Yeah, it had problems, but look at that clip I posted, that’s the thesis of the movie, kind of prescient about US society destroying itself and losing its values in response to terrorism 3 years before 9/11.
I don’t have time to watch the clip right now, but the scale on which we lost our identity, and the scale on which the internment stuff didn’t happen is a big reason why it doesn’t hold up at all. And in that movie, norms won. It lost big time then.
That movie was great, Denzel is GOAT, the whole thing got buried in a wave of pro-torture propaganda. No one remembers it. Everyone remembers the heroic Jack Bauer and his bullshit.
Um, what? The first two seasons predate the Trump presidency. Season 3 was the first one to try to work any of the new order into the story line, and it was notably worse than the previous two. So far, season 4 is boring.
It would be far more accurate to say that the rise of Trump ruined the show.
Yes, zik, I remember how much you loved that show. That’s the point, that he was seeing where things were headed until it didn’t do what he was predicting (we were in a very weird state in 2015/2016 when season 1/2 happened and once Trump was in his show was meaningless). His oligarchy stuff prior to Trump was right on the nose. The show started right as Trump was starting his rise, and it played very well into that rise.
I really don’t get why you’re such a fanboi of Sam Esmail. I really really don’t. I almost sent him a pair of scissors when I nearly tapped out of season 2 (tapped out first episode of season 3). You’re in an extreme minority in loving that show.
