Fall LC thread

Northwestern.

Some scholars suggest people in the Northwest only use 14 of the 15 vowel sounds. Try this example. Say “cot.” Now say “caught.” They shouldn’t sound the same, but they do when spoken by people in the Northwest. We seem to want to leave off the “u” sound in “caught.”

Okay, what the fuck?

Cot and caught are said differently?

I think this are a little different. “Caught” sounds more like “cawt” than “cot”.

Only by civilized people.

Same article says our dialect was influenced by Native American tribes.

You should feel horribly.

My theory is that this phenomenon is responsible for the solecism/idiom ‘to catch pregnant’, back-formed from a corruption of ‘got pregnant’ to ‘caught pregnant’. And I’m blaming immigrants!

St. Lousians say qwahtahhh instead of quarter - which I think we can all agree is just moronic and makes them inferior to Kansas Citians in every conceivably way.

Is that like quaw-taw or more like q’wtahh? The latter is pretty moronic.

Are we supposed to know how an Irish person (you’re Irish right?) says “quaw-taw” and “q’wtahh”?

I honestly thought it would be fairly clear. Quaw-taw is just taw-taw with a qu as the staw-taw. Q’wtahh sounds like Klingon. Does that help?

It’s qwatahh (said quickly, no emphasis - like butter). As in “can I get a qwatahh for the sodahh machine?” - like the East Coast wannabe crappy-BBQ-eating Catholic school mama’s boys they are.

But these are just objective facts. I state them with no malice.

Man, that’s confusing. The trailing h suggests it’s drawn-out, not staccato. Quawtah or something like that. Non-rhotic, basically?

I just like to put the hhh on there to make them look stupider.

Why is any media person still attending Burkman/Wohl press conferences? Is this like the journalist‘s version of watching The Room?

Yes

Also I think if turned on discourse supports audio files in posts if anyone wants to put in voice examples.

Seems like good news.

This is like that scene in GoT where after several seasons of the audience applauding Danny’s foreign tongues, her new translator hears her speak a single syllable and declares Danny needs to be schooled asap

This beats the earlier scammed by panhandlers stories.
