Sorry, but I could give a shit.
Yeah, see, I don’t know what that means. All you’re saying is that you could give a shit. What am I supposed to do with that information? You could equally give 2, 3, 100 shits, at which point you’re actually implying that you’re deeply concerned. What’s next, a strongly worded letter?
Lester Bangs once called it the best album ever made.
Or, I could give zero. Don’t forget that one…buddy. ;)
It’s the anniversary today of one of those events that blew my mind when I first learnt about it.
Despite these raids, 4,000 to 5,000 people succeeded in demonstrating peacefully on the Grands Boulevards from République to Opéra, without incident. Blocked at Opéra by police forces, the demonstrators backtracked. Reaching the Rex cinema (the site of the present Le Rex Club on the “Grands Boulevards”), the police opened fire on the crowd and charged, leading to several deaths. On the Neuilly bridge (separating Paris from the suburbs), the police detachments and FPA members also shot at the crowd, killing some. Algerians were thrown into and drowned in the Seine at points across the city and its suburbs, most notably at the Pont Saint-Michel in the center of Paris and near the Prefecture of Police, very close to Notre Dame de Paris.
Worth adding for context that this was during the Algerian War of Independence. In 1958, after way too many shenanigans to get into, de Gaulle had come back to power and made it clear he was willing to get a peace deal whatever it took. However the detail of that was unsurprisingly tricky on both sides, and in mid 1961 the FLN resumed its bombing campaign in Paris. 11 policemen had been killed in the months before this happened.
Most of the more detailed stuff I’ve read is in French, but the estimates of dead in the 200+ range seem to be supported by most recent historians. This was successfully covered up for years, Hollande first officially recognised it as a massacre in 2012.
Yeah he really went downhill after that revelation.
For anyone interested, Alistair Horne’s A Savage War of Peace is a good read on the Algerian War of Independence. Pretty sure that’s where I first read about the massacre in Paris. Insane that something like that could happen in a place like Paris and be largely covered up.
Maybe this is one for the hot takes thread but I could give a shit sounds way better than the clunky I couldn’t give a shit and everyone knows what you mean. The extra syllable disrupts the flow of the sentence.
But that leads to the anarchy of could care less, could give a fuck mate and could give a flying one, which we just can’t have.
Just understand who looks like a dumbshit when this is pointed out…
Asterisks are wild. You can match them to any number you want.
Is there anything more passive/aggressive than “slow pony!!!” ?

Language evolves and meaning is largely cultural, not literal. I could or could not care less.
Now if you want to really get into the grammar of wolves, I’m guessing a lot of you say “a couple things to do today” and have no idea why that is at minimum light treason
Whichever one proves my point
