Fall LC thread

Was pretty stoked to see a letter from the CA treasurer’s disbursements office in the mail.

Some companies and places like universities offer housing-related benefits, but I don’t think there’s anything general. You and she should ask your respective HRs.

Those are like the paychecks I got serving.

Could it be about changing your withholds to account for a reduced tax burden at year-end due to mortgage interest deductions?

I’ve literally seen this happen once! It was unreal. It ate a baby moose that fell into the ocean off the coast.

1976 is the best year. Taxi Driver, Network, All the President’s Men, The Omen, Rocky, Carrie, Marathon Man, The Outlaw Josie Wales. Haven’t seen A Star is Born but it was supposed to be good as well.

Holy shit, you’re not kidding about 1990.

Goodfellas
Home Alone
Pretty Woman
Total Recall
Misery
Dances with Avatar
Ghost
Dick Tracy
Back to the Future part III (first movie I saw at the cinema)
Teenage Mutant Ninja Turtles
Tremors
Miller’s Crossing
Die Hard 2
Awakenings
Edward Scissorhands
Kindergarten Cop
Young Guns II
Child’s Play 2
It (mini-series)
Rocky V (GOAT)
Jacob’s Ladder

1990 could easily have been the GOAT year for cinema, and yet its reputation will forever be sullied by the release of Godfather part III

Sleeping on 95 are we?

Braveheart
Seven
Apollo 13
Casino
12 Monkeys
The Usual Suspects
Heat
Crimson Tide
Die Hard 3 (hot take: often stupid but also underrated)

Clueless
Billy Madison
Tommy Boy
Mortal Kombat
Showgirls

Before Sunrise

It’s true that 95 doesn’t have an all time classic in there like Shawshank, but give me 95 over 94 any day

Adaptation
Gangs of New York
Red Dragon
Panic Room
Catch Me If You Can (best Spielberg movie imo)
28 Days Later
Bourne Identity
8 Mile
Minority Report (Spielberg again?!??, another one of the best Spielberg movies)

Not bad! Minority report is particularly good once you realize that the last third of the movie

is Tom Cruise dreaming in future prison after he gets caught. “They say your life flashes before your eyes, that all your dreams come true.”

Chicago, The Pianist and The Hours are all a snooze tho.

Wow it seems like Catch Me If You Can is more recent than 02

Cult status[edit]

Since its release, the film has achieved cult status. According to writer Naomi Klein, ironic enjoyment of the film initially arose among those with the video before MGM capitalized on the idea. MGM noticed the video was performing well because “trendy twenty-somethings were throwing Showgirls irony parties, laughing sardonically at the implausibly poor screenplay and shrieking with horror at the aerobic sexual encounters”.[30]

In the United States, Showgirls is shown at midnight movies alongside such films as The Rocky Horror Picture Show and The Adventures of Priscilla, Queen of the Desert . It is heralded as one of the best “bad movies”, a camp classic in the vein of Beyond the Valley of the Dolls . Although the film was not successful when first released theatrically, it generated more than $100 million from video rentals[8] and became one of MGM’s top 20 all-time bestsellers.[9] Verhoeven accepted the film’s unexpected cult status, saying “Maybe this kind of ritualistic cult popularity isn’t what I intended, but it’s like a resurrection after the crucifixion.”[31] Eszterhas, however, maintains that the humor was intentional: “What Paul [Verhoeven] and I had in mind was something darkly funny. We went through the script line by line, and we were really laughing at some of it. I defy people to tell me that a line like, ‘How does it feel not to have anybody coming on you anymore’ isn’t meant to be funny.”[13]

In Ireland, the film was banned on November 8, 1995. The Irish Film Censor Board chair Sheamus Smith provided no explanation for the ban, but it had been speculated that the ban was owed to the film’s rape scene, which was initially cut in the UK.[32][33][34][35] The film was passed uncut for its video release on October 23, 2017.[36]

The rights to show the film on TV were eventually purchased by the VH1 network. However, because of the film’s frequent nudity, a censored version was created with black bras and panties digitally rendered to hide all exposed breasts and genitalia. Also, several scenes were removed entirely. Berkley refused to re-dub her lines,[ citation needed ] so a noticeably different actress’s voice can be heard on the soundtrack.[37]

As revealed on the DVD release, a sign showing the distance to Los Angeles in the last shot of the film hinted at a sequel in which Nomi takes on Hollywood. The film was also ranked #36 on Entertainment Weekly magazine’s "The Top 50 Cult Movies list.

I’m not saying people don’t watch it.

I’m not saying niche audiences haven’t found genuine pleasure in watching it.

I’m saying it’s not a good movie by any measure lol.

Lol nice billing code. I think this might be one of those mock phishing emails my company sends out to try to trap us so they can educate us. The internet has nothing about it.

I’ll admit I would be delighted to attend a Showgirls midnight screening a la Rocky Horror. I’ve just never managed to make it through an entire viewing. It’s sort of like Amazing Spider-Man 2, somehow always worse than you think it will be, no matter how many times you’ve tried to watch it.

You have to watch it with your pants up, that’s the secret
