It was a yuge adjustment for me going from CST to EST about 15 years ago. I think it’s definitely real based on my sample size of 1
If readers doubt this, they need only seek venture capital for their own technology concept that “might possibly” disrupt the existing order, or that “could” eat into the market share of the presently dominant.
Aim high. An all-in-one gadget that dispenses with the pesky medical profession. As visionary as the Wright brothers. Damn right it would ‘eat into the market share of the presently dominant.’
'cept the home-pregnancy-and-everything-else-test-device was outsourced to a third party because it’s realization is an impossibility errr
The “cutting corners” part as explained in Bad Blood seemed a lot more about using third party equipment when Theranos’s future was rushed into the present by a surge of publicity and excitement that, in fairness, no one could have imagined.
Early riser influence on society is massively over-representative and annoying as hell. Bunch of assholes acting like they’ve discovered the secret to a productive life through determination and discipline when they’re really just biologically hard wired to wake up an hour before dawn and fall asleep during Jeopardy.
I’ve definitely tended to get up earlier and go to sleep earlier as I’ve gotten older. You could come up with some evolutionary justification for this phenomenon, where there might be some advantage to having a staggered sleep schedule where young people tend stay up a bit later and older folks wake up a bit earlier.
It’s not said often enough around here, especially to the bad posters nobody likes
Morning person checking in. Get it from my father. It’s amazing how much time you can waste when you start before 6am.
I looked at a review - it looks great. The interweb says it’s available at my local library. I’m on the way as soon as I get a shower. Thanks.
I used to watch letterman in high school, when he was on at 12:30. I was tired through much of high school. Think I took like 1 college class before 9am, with 11 being my sweet spot.
I’m going to steal a take from Twitter here: the Theranos documentary is like one of those Batman adventures where Batman and Robin can’t fight Poison Ivy because they’re too horny so Batgirl has to step in and save the day for them. It’s like all these techbros threw ten billion dollars at her because they were hypnotized by her sexy Steve Jobs cosplay but then this woman scientist shows up and immediately sees through all of Holmes’s bullshit.

This same logic they present there would apply to the first company to realistically implement Richard’s algorithm from Silicon Valley, but way too soon because of how ‘popular’ it would be, and how everyone would want a successful version of it yesterday. When that first shady company rushing to market is a fraud over it, does the whole algorithm die, or is it possible the algorithm is a fraud? Who can tell?
I’m just gonna guess Theranos’ whole business idea was a grift intended to play out over 20 years or so (hoping technology would catch up maybe), but it turned out kind of like the Putin idea of getting Trump into the WH when it got interest way too fast. Maybe a better allegory is Ben Johnson obliterating the WR in the 100m after being a schlub not long before his massive use of steroids. Or maybe none of this makes any sense at all, like Theranos as a business.
If you enjoyed the most recent episode of Last Week Tonight (or if you don’t enjoy the show but watch it anyway?), this is the book he referenced in the segment on the NWS.
It gives the same kind of deep dive into just what each governmental agency is responsible for that most people have no clue about, as well as the consequences of Trump gutting each agency.
If you’re not familiar with Michael Lewis (and/or don’t tend to read analyses on the inner workings of governmental agencies lol), you can get a sense for just how gripping Lewis makes these otherwise impenetrable topics by looking at two of his most successful books: THE BIG SHORT and MONEYBALL.
So now that you’ve outed yourself as a SV watcher, what did you think of the last season?
It wasn’t very memorable, but I think Kendall Roy should probably gut their business for parts.
I got something like that but it didn’t seem to help. It rubbed on my nose so much, I think that combined with sweat made the rosacea worse. I need a big one that never touches the nose - like the Humpty Hump guy had.
I once had a 8 am class in University. Terrible decision. I skipped it a lot and the times I did go I could barely keep my eyes open and mostly thought about how I wanted to be a sleep instead of paying attention to the lecture. It really didn’t help that the subject was world politics and the class was super boring to begin with.
Same here - except I also skipped my late morning, afternoon, and night classes.
Dang, walked downtown and it’s closed for indigenous people’s day.
