Fall LC thread

Nothing chafes me as much as when someone doesn’t perform for everyone in the teahut. That’s just rude.

Wtf is a portacabin? That doesn’t clear things up at all. What weird-ass country are you in?

That looks terrifying.

At the time, the Chicago industry was dominated by a few operators who made money through fares, not financial maneuvers. Two fleets — run by members of the same family — controlled most of the medallions, and the permits were worth so little that the city periodically gave them away to drivers. There was a private market for those who could not wait for a city giveaway, but it was sleepy.

The good old days…

Bingo. I was never able to beat the Silly course.

There was an arcade game from the Early-mid 80s I’ve wanted to play again for years now but I legit cannot remember what it was called. It was a fighting game, more like Karate Champ than Street Fighter except that, like Street Fighter, you had varying backgrounds. It was set in medieval times and you fought with a sword and wore full plate mail armor. As you and your opponent landed blows on various parts of each other’s bodies, pieces of the armor would go flying. Eventually with you or your opponent (sometimes both) would be basically naked down to your undies and you’d be allowed to plunge your sword into their hearts, necks or knees. It had 1p and 2p modes and in 1p mode it was like Street Fighter in that your opponents got progressively more difficult and wore more and more elaborate armor. AFAIK it was never released on Atari or NES, in fact I only ever saw it in the little quickie mart down the street from my house, even the “big” mall arcade did not have it. Does this ring a bell for anyone? TIA

Gladiator

Aww yes that’s it! Such cheesy goodness! I’d forgotten that it’s also a side scroller

btw if you’re looking for a great nostalgia fix, head over to YouTube and check out Aqualung’s channel. He does “reviews” of tons of old games for 2600, NES/SNES and the like. I guarantee you will find one you loved dearly back in the day but had almost completely forgotten. His delivery is uneven at times but he knows his stuff and is funny especially when it’s a particularly bad game or bad console port of an otherwise good game (lookin at you Atari 2600 Pac Man). I could have saved myself the horrors of E.T. if he had been around back then.

Here’s a few of his “reviews”

Bro, I had it.

I heard like the crystal crunch sound as soon as your referenced it.

I like to sometimes watch clips from cartoons of the 80s and especially video game videos. Reopens memories I didn’t know I had. GI Joe and Batman for the NES were awesome. I remember thinking the Batman game seemed too cool to not be SNES - came out at same time.

Does anyone remember North vs South? That game was mindless fun. It was like an early command and conquer almost.

Ton of memories flooding back. Ghosts and goblins was great and hard, if I remember right.

Of course there’s the Castlevania games. That reminds me of Captain N.

Growing up from the late 80s into being a teen in the mid 90s was pretty awesome.

Anyone remember Mike Tyson’s Punch-Out!!? I solved that game not long after it came out. The way to beat Tyson in the game was to go at him hard. Funny how that ended up being the trick to beating him in real life, too.

In fighting: You bully a bully.

Otherwise, they’ll just walk you down (if you’re not Ali doing the rope a dope anyway). It’s different from box a brawler, and brawl a boxer. Tyson wasn’t a wild brawler, he was going to control the ring and walk you down.

The problem with Tyson’s opponents is that his punches really hurt, and to get inside that they had to get hurt and often get knocked out. Once that house of cards fell, it really fell.

“Everybody has a plan until they get punched in the mouth.”

Mike Tyson

You don’t get inside on him.

You keep him at your range. He’s the shorter man with a reach disadvantage. You have to box aggressively, like Holyfield.

He also had terrible lungs so if you could survive to the 4th-5th round you basically won. Unfortunately getting out of the second round with Tyson conscious was really challenging, and vs peak Tyson quite possibly impossible. When he was fast on his feet and could close range he was absolutely terrifying.

I never could beat the OG Megaman, though I beat like 2-5.

I think most of those guys lost before they got in there.

It’s like Ronda in the UFC. Some of those girls that she tore through would have beaten her in a rematch once the air of invincibility is gone.

Most of those guys weren’t great either, old man Larry Holmes and who else? Michael Spinx was ok but there’s like no one else. Frank Bruno?

His resume kind of looks like Anderson Silva’s in hindsight. Almost all those dudes are ho hum. He benefited from when he was born. No way he’s getting through Ali, Frazier, Norton, Foreman the same unscathed.
