The details are pretty disturbing. Don’t look any further.
But if you must: Check out Food, Inc.

i feel like pointing out how dumb that is would make a good standardized test question
I should know better then to post this, but I actually know someone whose career and reputation were more or less ruined by NY Post reporting. She was a administrative public employee (non-elected) who lost her job in a minor non-criminal scandal. In the process of reporting on it the Post contacted a recently jilted former lover who shared with them a number of racy photographs which the Post published despite the fact that they had no relation to the event. FYI she was a very active lefty activist which is clearly why the Post felt that the pics were newsworthy. Many years later and you literally cannot Google her name without the photos coming up. Just gutting to see that happen to someone you know and respect.
fwiw, “there are too many lawyers” is pushed pretty hard by koch inc. So whether you believe it’s true or not, any actual reduction in the number of lawyers, or simplifying of the legal code, would almost certainly benefit the wealthy.
Also tort reform is a GOP wet dream
Broken clocks are right twice a day. I can tell you that there are a lot of really really stupid lawsuits and worrying about being sued is a meaningful driver of medical costs.
Malpractice insurance is super expensive and doctors do a lot of super unnecessary shit to make absolutely sure they can’t be sued.
In my industry we’ve seen 9 figure judgements against companies that were literally not doing anything wrong. The most notable one I’m thinking of is a family losing control of their vehicle, ending up on the wrong side of the highway and hitting a semi head on… and then winning a XX,XXX,XXX verdict against a trucking company because they all died. So did the driver. Apparently the trucking company was at fault because they had a truck on the road in semi bad weather in the Rockies. Nevermind that in the winter under that standard nothing would ever move up there… and the trucker wasn’t remotely at fault.
I’m sorry but when I say that lawyers are rent seekers this is exactly what I mean. Almost every dollar they extract comes from someone else, and yes sometimes that money is justified and rights a wrong… but pretty frequently it ISN’T justified and they make a lot of money off the bullshit stuff too.
What exactly did the lawyers do wrong in this example? Sounds like you have beef with the jurors or judge who determined they WERE at fault.
Also your summary of this almost certainly leaves out important relevant facts.
I mean yeah, lawsuits can be expensive and it sucks that CYA testing is part of life nowadays, but when the only alternative is taking away an injured person’s lone source of recourse I’m just fine with the status quo.
I won’t bore you with the details on how states like Texas have dropped an asteroid-sized hammer on plaintiffs attorneys over the past 20+ years and STILL manage to have the highest healthcare costs in the country.
I find ambulance chasers on TV mostly offensive but shit I mean who else is advocating against scumbag insurers who are fine cashing patients’ checks when they’re healthy and then summarily telling them to get fucked when they try to cash in on what is rightfully theirs? Should we just wait for the free market to sort it all out?
The system is naturally rigged in favor of defendants, Im ok with shady plaintiff’s attorneys, or at least, there are way more important issues that need to be addressed to make the legal system more equitable first.
Winter LC thread soon?
