Fall LC thread

Phase one: everyone around me is an idiot
Phase two: well, except other atheists
Phase three: nope, those people are morons too

I feel like I have to hope that there’s some kind of center of morality, whatever that is. Some other plane beyond our understanding or whatever.

Otherwise it’s straight nihilism. And no one wants that: it’s empty.

I didn’t grow up with church but was always interested in it and would watch A&E Mysteries of the Bible and whatever other infotainment I could on PBS or whatever. I was similarly into Greek mythology in 7th grade. Religion in general has always interested me. Then I got my first real girlfriend who was a christian. I bought the hook, line, and sinker; it’s a long story but similar to conservatism - it’s pretty obvious you need to distance yourself when you’re surrounded by charlatans.

I still hope against hope there’s something after death, but I’ve come more to grips with the likelihood there’s nothingness. Most people seem to shrug and be like “well at least I’m just asleep” but I guess I dig my consciousness more than most.

Thinking about our size in the universe gives me a panic attack tbh. The whole thing is so illogical to begin with, existence isn’t rational. That’s where smart guy atheism breaks down for me. Most of them seem to be very literal, in the box thinkers.

I’ve got you all beat. Behold Epoch football!

Same here. George Carlin was the first person who made me realize it was possible and ok to be an atheist.

I was raised proper catholic but had thought it didn’t make any kind of sense from pretty early. I remember being about 7 or 8 and deciding heaven couldn’t exist as there was no possible place that both me and my Grandma would consider paradise given our different interests.

But it wasn’t till I was 12 and in mass one day at school, when the kid sat next to me didn’t get communion saying he was an athiest, that I realised it was a thing. Before that I used to just look around at mass and think how weird it was that everyone bought into it. Guess I’d better just keep my head down, I thought. Religion is one hell of a drug.

I’ve pretty much always been an atheist. One of my memories from public school was having to go to religion class (armed forces base school), and during silent prayer, while everyone else was supposedly praying, I was thinking, “What am I supposed to be doing here? This is dumb.” I wonder how many other kids were thinking the same thing.

Australia got a little deadlier

One of the world’s most deadly fungi has been identified growing in Australia for the first time, scientists say.

Of the hundred or so toxic mushrooms that are known to researchers, this is the only one in which the toxins can be absorbed through the skin," said Dr Matt Barrett.

You can tell when deplorables are shook based on their social media. Every time bad shit happens to Trump, their social media pages explode in a series of pro-Trump, anti-Democrat memes for a short period of time.

They know things are getting bad but cover themselves in Trump love to protect themselves from reality which is that deep down they know shit is fucked and that MAGA has failed.

I think I was 9 years old when I became an atheist, the worst smug kind. Now I’ve chilled out and wouldn’t identify as an atheist. Sure, there’s a God. Why not?

My feelings on god/atheism:

I don’t know; you don’t either. So let’s just try not to be dicks to each other.

Honestly this makes me wonder how a wealth tax would be implemented or enforced.

It won’t be honestly. Yang’s got better policy ideas than anyone else mainly because they could actually get done. That being said she’s running for president and an imaginary wealth tax is a good way to answer the question “but how would you pay for it”. Probably with massively higher income taxes on high earners lol.
