Fall LC thread

Continuing my hate-watch of the Watchmen - it’s only just occurred to me that there’s now been a movie adaptation and a TV sequel, and both of them have flatly refused to accept that Adrian Veidt is American.

He is not only American but his defining characteristic is his Americanness

IKR? Supposed to be this granite-jawed perfect physical specimen, full of drive and positivity and everything else American culture lionises. And in the film he’s Steve Buscemi’s emo kid brother (also German) and in this he’s, well, Jeremy Irons.

Sounds like they should have gotten Danny McBride to play the dude

Honestly, I could maybe see him manage The Comedian.

I know. It’s crazy. He is suppose to be the human embodiment of Regan’s shinning city on a hill.

I have given up on the show after the second episode.

Watchmen is the only comic I’ve ever read and loved in my life. It’s unadaptable and people need to stop trying.

The Watchmen movie was good, as are many comic book movies.

Trolling aside, whole chunks of it are perfectly watchable, it just diametrically misses the point of the source material.

Well played sir.

Now to tie it back to yesterday’s discussion, the movie has the single worst, hands-down, never to be surpassed worst sex scene in all of cinema. Maybe in the history of all art.

Also, The Comedian is clearly supposed to be the quintessentially American character. Being super-smart has never been a stereotypical American characteristic.

I take your point - it might be more accurate to say that Adrian Veidt isn’t so much American as he is America.

Rootlessness with an attendant obsession with roots, precedents, legitimacy. The bone-deep urge to do GREAT THINGS and the perfect assurance of natural moral supremacy:

Boundless positivity and assurance of victory’s inevitability:

And under it all, an utterly ruthless pragmatism:

And you might say, hey, nation of immigrants, so why not German, why not English? But nah. American. America. No offence.

Veidt is how America sees itself. The comedian is how it actually is.

What the fuck is the HBL? Is that the league the Globetrotters play in?

Also, where can I get an HBL Soledad rookie card?

The Good Place episode on this dilemma is incredible.

I just graded 70 freshmen essays trying to solve the trolley problem. It’s also why I always call Trolly “Trolley”. AMA.

Was that episode part of your course?

I showed a clip from the episode. Just the 30 seconds or a minute of when Michael first transports them to the trolley and Chidi has to make a decision.
