s2e16 Q-Who?

Q keeps his promise to never come near the enterprise again by altering time and space so picard inadvertently walks out of the turbolift and into a shuttlecraft far far away from the enterprise. just jean luc and Q, two boys floating way way out in space.

2fb395fb-f56e-40d0-9910-aeba6f3456a6_text

picard agrees to let Q make a formal statement back on the ship, in ten forward. guinan recognizes Q and hates his ass. Q reveals guinan is over 200 years old and goes by other names. Q says he was thrown out of the continuum and he wants to join the enterprise crew, and he’s even willing to renounce his powers to do so.

picard knows this is all a game and calls out the bullshit right away. Q snaps his fingers, throws the enterprise 2 years of maximum warp travel away from the edge of federation space, then disappears. it’s the part of the galaxy guinan’s people are from, and where the borg are now.

the only communication the borg offer is an assessment of their superior power and a warning that resistance will result in punishment. a chunk of the enterprise is blown apart and 18 unnamed crew are killed. Q pops in to ask, “are you SURE you don’t want me on the crew?  ”

the enterprise tries to run for it. borg pursue and at maximum warp they’re still gaining. Q appears on the bridge to let everyone know that the borg cannot be outrun or destroyed and will relentlessly pursue. faced with his only remaining option of firing one final salvo at point blank range with no shields, picard turns to Q and begs him for help. he shouts, “i need you!” and Q loves it, he absolutely eats it up. so he snaps his fingers and they’re flung back to safety. for now.

I loved this episode because, even though the whole premise of the series is based on exploration, it’s a kind of incremental exploration, and having a god like being, Q, flinging the enterprise into There Be Dragons territory, and how terrifying the Borg are means this shit is serious. Or at least there are more things lurking out there than the monster of the week

s2e17 Samaritan Snare

a ship crewed by a race of slow adults is stalled in space and the enterprise assists by lending engineering expertise. meanwhile picard and wesley are alone together for 8 hours in a shuttle craft. wesley is taking a starfleet exam and picard has to get his bionic heart tuned up. he brings a book so he doesn’t have to talk but fuckin wesley keeps yapping. when picard gets up and walks to the other side of the shuttle and sticks his nose in the book, wesley turns around and goes, “you ever wish you had kids?”

we get some good picard lore before he nearly dies on the operating table. geordi is kidnapped by chunguses and the enterprise tricks them with a clever ploy. congrats? idk what’s crueler, outwitting a spaceship crewed entirely by slow adults or just blowing them up

s2e18 Up The Long Ladder

the enterprise picks up a group of federation colonists who act as 19th century irish peasants, complete with farm animals and straw bedding everywhere. they’re aware of starships and interstellar trade but they’re like irish amish and are fully committed to the bit. riker falls in love with a fiery lass who, despite being a hard-working farmer, has perfect makeup, and just as much makeup as every other 1980s woman on the ship

meanwhile, they find out about the existence of a lost colony, uncontacted for 300 years. they got into cloning and never looked back. did fine technologically but they got a dna problem because of too much cloning. they need fresh dna, but riker is vehemently against it, insisting the only proper way to live forever is to have full penetrative sex with a woman. when the colonists take dna samples and wipe his memory, riker returns to abort the riker clones in their growth vats with a phaser to the head.

picard has the bright idea to combine the two colonies, but there’s a severe culture clash between the asexual polycule of scientists and this band of drunken irish peasants. picard demands dei be enforced, and it saves everyone’s lives.

troi’s mom is an official ambassador of betazed and she has official business on the enterprise (beyond counseling her daughter to be more sexually aggressive with her coworkers). so we get to see her make picard uncomfortable as she repeatedly tries to seduce him. her telepathic powers are stronger than ever, but she’s completely misreading signals from picard. she’s going through betazed menopause which has quadruped her already formidable sex drive, and to avoid upsetting an official ambassador picard decides to hide out in the holodeck and solve a solo dixon hill mystery

mrs troi nearly marries riker before falling in love with the dixon hill holodeck bartender for a few minutes, at which point picard escorts her to the transporter because they’ve arrived at the negotiation planet. as soon as she steps into the transporter room she identifies the two monstrous fishmen delegates as assassins, effortlessly reading their minds perfectly. they’re taken to the brig and as she beams away she again announces to the room that picard is thinking lewd thoughts about her.

s2e20 The Emissary

ep starts with riker data worf geordi and the new doctor playing no limit 5-card draw. lots of string bets and splashing the pot. data refers to a fold as a “bend”, it’s an amateur clownshow. although i like to imagine that the fine points of etiquette of our noble game were lost to history, and these guys just don’t know better. worf wins the pot on a big raise and mucks his hand. geordi asks what he had and worf says “klingons do not bluff”

federation top brass orders the enterprise to work with a half-klingon half-human female diplomatic emissary. their task is to diplomatically deescalate tensions with a ship of klingons that have been in cryosleep for 40 years, because when they wake up they’ll think they’re still at war with the federation. picard orders worf to work closely with the emissary, but they have a history so worf suggests someone else do it. picard has a masterful management style, he asks, “do you have a personal reason you can’t work with her?” and worf says yes. and instead of asking what that personal reason is, he follows up with, “do you have a professional reason you can’t work with her?” and just gives him a look like, ‘do your fuckin job, mate’

worf and the emissary bang, of course. and immediately afterwards, worf insists they’re married. but she’s liberal to his conservative, she refuses to get married because she wants to focus on her career and her own life and worf gets mad at her for not respecting ancient klingon traditions. a tale as old as time.

in the end, they fool the awakened klingons by dressing up worf as the captain and the emissary as the xo. worf successfully bluffs the other captain into yielding command of the ship. i guess klingons can bluff :smiling_face_with_sunglasses:

when the emissary leaves the ship, worf and her have a moment where they both express they would like to be together if things were different. worf paraphrases the jerry maguire you complete me line as she’s beaming off and she says nothing, she han solos him.

s2e21 Peak Performance

because of the borg threat, the enterprise is participating in federation wargames and they bring aboard a master strategist, a nonhuman friendly alien. he looks exactly like what you’d imagine the best hearts of iron 4 player looks like: short fat and somewhat autistic. worf may not like it, but this is what peak performance looks like.

riker challenges this supposed expert strategist to a game called strategema, which is a heads-up competition of… strategy. every finger on both hands is hooked by wires to the central strategema machine, and it looks like a super fast 3-tier Go game. worf mentions that he “wagered heavily in the ship’s pool” on riker’s success. it’s the second time he’s mentioned his gambling hobby but again, without money idk what he’s betting. is he, like, agreeing to be someone’s maid or butler for the day if he looses? is he risking a level of personal embarrassment or because he’s klingon is he just gonna let some sicko shock him with a cattle prod off camera? i’ll let you know if they ever reveal it

riker loses extra quickly, and the new doctor proposes Data play him and make him humble, but the supernerd beats Data and he spirals into an existential crisis. i’m finally liking the new doctor. but according to patrick stewart’s memoir she never made any friends on the set. and that’s coming from a guy who says he lived like a monk for these first two seasons, going to work and going home 4 out of 5 nights a week, except for friday nights when he would go to the theater, alone.

in the middle of the war game (riker was winning) a ferengi ship swoops in and starts attacking for real. the crew outwits the ferengi and Data plays a rematch where he forces the supernerd into a stalemate in strategema. the fat nerd ragequits so it’s not technically a win but the crew is stoked on Data anyway.

on a short mission to investigate an uncontacted planet, riker gets a minor scratch and is infected by alien microbes that seriously threaten his life. it’s the season 2 finale, anything can happen, of course riker can die. he can grow a beard and he can die. the transporter for some reason can’t filter it out and i guess they can’t find a comb in his bedroom. this is real.

when riker falls into a coma he starts dreaming of all-time greatest riker moments. unfortunately, erotic memories supercharge the growth rate of the microbes, and riker has a lot of em. the doctor and troi work together to fine tune electrodes to induce memories of high anxiety and pain in riker’s mind, but that also look badass and cool for the viewers. and it works. the virus is defeated by clip show.

doing a clip show for a season finale is so lazy it’s heresy by modern tv standards but riker had a lot of great moments and watching them was fun. it was more fun than the episodes i ranked lower

That’s how I feel about The Naked Now.

I always wondered if this was a factor in head writer Maurice Hurley being let go. It really was a terrible decision, even for back then I think. The difference in writing from s2 to s3 is stark and obvious.

I’ve read the clip show happened because they were over budget on other episodes. Hurley reportedly didn’t care by that point because he knew he was out the door.

the decision to watch these first two seasons in these troubling times is both commendable and shows a streak of masochism i respect. i cant watch a lot of these. finally its watchable. s3 is peak television

I think I was in first or second grade and remember staying home from school for i think chicken pox or something pretty severe and watching this episode. I didn’t really know anything about Star Trek but I remember a line from K Ehleyr ( I looked it up to make sure what it was exactly) " “I am not human, and I am not Klingon. I am not sure I know what I am.” And thinking Star Trek was pretty deep stuff! I remember it as my first memory of anything Star Trek or Star Wars.

wesley’s school science experiment infects the ship as the nanobot swarm becomes sentient. the ship’s computer is going haywire and there’s a very important cosmological event occurring just outside. more importantly, dr crusher is back with a GREAT haircut

using Data as a conduit, picard diplomatically negotiates with the nanobot swarm. they agree to fix the ship’s computer that they busted, and the federation grants them a homeworld. a whole planet for them to devour, i guess. and then seek more. idk about this one, bros
