a human colony on a desert planet is threatened by an alien race which the federation made a treaty with years ago. the aliens view humans as beneath them and have no qualms about exterminating them. it’s a race to evacuate the colony before the aliens arrive, but logistically there’s not enough time, and many colonists are resistant to leaving.
Data convinces the colonists that staying is untenable by committing some light terrorism on them. meanwhile picard digs up an obscure line in the extensive treaty that gives him the time he needs to get the human colonists out of there safely.

This is one of the most kickass scenes in the entire series. The aliens are hailing after Picard lawyered them, and Picard just strolls around the bridge letting the hail go to voice mail.
a planet is totally destroyed by nuclear weapons aside from a small rural cottage occupied by an innocent elderly couple who are white and heterosexual so it’s definitely not their fault. when the away team is investigating, troi becomes fascinated by a music box and she is haunted by the song long after she returns to the ship.
out of nowhere, an unidentified warship moves in to attack, and matches the enterprise’s evasive maneuvers with almost supernatural dexterity and speed. picard suspects the white heterosexual couple is behind this, because picard is woke and he doesn’t just assume those two qualities should equate to innocence. he beams down personally and interrogates them with polite conversation over tea. meanwhile troi is so haunted by the music box song that she has to be medically sedated. she’s like me when i first started listening to M83 - Midnight City
when the enterprise is attacked by a similar-but-stronger unidentified warship, picard is sure the elderly couple are the bad guys, and they’re being fooled by psychic illusions. he beams down to give them one last test, he says we’re dutybound to protect you so we’re gonna stay in orbit as long as both of you are alive. well coincidentally the warship comes back and obliterates the cottage from space. scans show no survivors.
but picard already solved the mystery, he’s like columbo in this one, he knows the old man is a powerful psychic entity and he keeps needling him until he just admits it. the old man undoes the psychic block on troi and reveals he is an alien of a race of immortals with powerful psychic powers, and that he’s a radical pacifist. he fell in love with a human woman and when their planet was attacked by a violent alien race, he didn’t fight against them, he let the colony be massacred. but then afterwards in grief of losing his love, he used his powers to genocide the aliens, which he now massively regrets.
picard is like, ‘that’s a horrific crime he did but he feels really bad about it and he’s too powerful for us to really do anything about it so we’re just gonna leave’ and the immortal psychic alien’s like ‘fine’

the federation secretly monitors bronze-age civilizations for anthropological science. they’re watching ray wise and his alien family when an accident blows a hole in their secret base and ray wise witnesses a bunch of mind blowing alien shit before falling off a cliff and injuring himself in a way only curable by doing a full-on alien abduction of ray wise.
in a dazed state in the medical bay, ray wise sees picard acting like a pure alpha and he and his daughter make up a religion that worships the space god picard. which is a shame because even though they’re bronze age, their society is firmly athiestic. ray wise starts evangelizing to his village and they’re skeptical until some villagers find the missing injured federation anthropologist. a catastrophe for prime directivists
loved watching picard abduct ray wise’s daughter and elegantly explain how the progression of technology and engineering can give anyone the illusion of magical powers. it’s like if BOB wasn’t evil

ep starts out with geordi failing to score on a carefully-planned romantic holodeck date. and when the enterprise is snared in a 1000-year-old space trap, it’s up to geordi to figure out how to get the warp engines working despite the trap’s mysterious effects.
he’s talking to the ship’s computer and going through technical manuals when he says something the ship takes literally and a beautiful woman scientist, the author of one of the technical manuals he was trying to comprehend, is conjured by the ship’s holodeck system. she’s giving good information but he’s put off by how rigid and unnatural her behavior is, so he innocently tweaks her programming to be his ideal girlfriend.
in the end, the simulations show their best bet is one burst of energy and then coasting out of the trap using air thrusters to navigate the debris field with no shields. picard takes the helm and personally guides them out using a large asteroid’s gravitational pull to slingshot 360 them to safety

the defector is a romulan patriot, he loves his home but he felt he had a moral obligation to stop the march to war. he scuttled the ship he escaped on and refuses to give up any romulan secrets other than this one bit of intel. picard and the defector go one-on-one and he agrees to fully cooperate, giving up everything from fleet movements to cloaking tech.
when the enterprise gets to the alleged base in the neutral zone, it’s empty. the romulans were feeding this guy false intel and hoping he would defect and lead the enterprise into a trap. it all ends with a great standoff with the same romulan captain they’ve tangled with before. enterprise had a cloaked klingon cruiser backing them up, and the romulans backed off.
after realizing he betrayed his beloved nation for nothing, the defector kills himself with a space age cyanide pill. oof

james cromwell (the leftist uncle in Succession and lenny’s mentor in The Young Pope) is the prime minister of a planet that is hunting this dude who is superhumanly good at fleeing. after capturing the fugitive, troi visits and empathizes with him in the brig. she learns he was a soldier, genetically modified by his own government to be extra good at stuff like fleeing and fighting.
enhanced soldiers like him were deemed too dangerous to reintegrate into normal society, so they were sent to a prison colony for the rest of their lives after completing their military deployment. when the enterprise is transporting him to a police shuttle, he breaks out of the beam and runs amok in the enterprise before escaping to the prison colony to start a revolt.
picard and the core crew beam down mid-coup to explain to the prime minister that the supersoldiers only attack when threatened or provoked, and they’ll have to negotiate a fair treaty diplomatically, without violent coersion, or be killed.
