an elderly scientist is just diagnosed with final stage terminal [future disease]. he’s Data’s academic grandfather, having mentored Data’s inventor dr soong. This is an actual thing among scientists, you meet someone at a conference and say, “you’re my academic grandpa” and explain the connection and they tend to get a kick out of it.
but what doesn’t happen among real scientists (yet) is for the elderly dying scientist to hijack the body of his android grand-apprentice so that his consciousness can live on forever. the enterprise crew is instantly suspicious, of course, because this guy doesn’t act like Data at all and he’s bad at pretending.
picard guilts the old scientist into giving Data’s body back to him, but before he hands it over the wily coot inserts his consciousness into the ship’s computer. it doesn’t seem to be affecting the ship’s functions so the crew decides to just forget about it.

the enterprise comes across a highly infectious disease that causes people to rapidly age. the doctor is infected and the crew is able to get a strand of her hair off of a hairbrush, plug her dna into the transporter, and beam her back on without the acute progeria. this was the first time this was tried in transporter history, and lends credibility to the theory that the transporter kills the user and just reassembles a copy of them somewhere else. horrific.
also, the colony was genetically engineering humans to be born “perfect” and with strong telekinetic powers. those children were the cause of the disease. the doctor notes in her log that she commends the scientists who died of the acute progeria for their sacrifice. what? who asked for a race of genetically superior supermen who kill everyone they come in contact with? what moral principles are guiding her? are her subtle pro-nazi inclinations the reason they brought dr crusher back? find out next time on star trek: the next generation

the enterprise is participating in an officer exchange program and riker is sent to serve on a klingon ship. on his way over, worf lets him know that it’s customary for any klingon officer who appears weak to be murdered immediately. within 5 minutes of arriving, riker has to beat the second officer’s ass for talking shit.
there’s a spaceborne bacterial infection on both ships, but poor communication from an alien exchange member on the bridge crew led to a delayed response. the klingons turn their suspicion into confrontation, setting up riker to order an attack on the enterprise.
riker tags the klingon captain so the enterprise accidentally beams him off thinking he’s riker. riker then takes command on the klingon ship, and orders the enterprise to surrender. picard smiles and “surrenders”, allowing both ships to begin repairs.

riker geordi Data and the new doctor are playing dealer’s choice poker. riker deals 5 card stud and bluffs Data off 3 queens while showing 4 hearts lol
a bunch of federation Data-haters come aboard and say they’re gonna disassemble Data to study his workings. Data really doesn’t want to be disassembled. he tries to explain the concept of emergent properties and his innate humanity to his would-be dissectors. they tell him he doesn’t have a choice in the matter, so Data resigns starfleet. but the starfleet goons insist he can’t resign and they’re gonna disassemble him anyway.
this sets up an ad hoc trial to decide if Data has human rights. picard will be Data’s defense counsel, and riker is forced to act on behalf of the prosecution. in the end, data proves his humanity in part by admitting in court that he banged tasha yar in episode 2. “he’s remarkable”, the evil roboticist admits after seeing the full-body holographic image of tasha yar.

I hope it’s pot limit 5 card stud, cause if it’s limit lol folding to riker ever. Also lol at 5 card stud being the poker game of the future. Even when this aired people had stopped playing that game. wsop dropped it in 1975 cause the same guy won every year. (literally) Pot limit can make a good game though.
I think it was limit, yeah. And when the new doctor took the deck she called for some outrageously obscure game. They’re goofing around. No strips of latinum here it’s play money
a young princess about wesley’s age comes aboard the ship, accompanied by her stern matronly governess who can shape shift into shelly from twin peaks. it’s love at first sight, and wesley goes around to the grown men on the crew asking them how start a romance with a girl. geordi’s advice is to ignore your base impulses and focus on engineering. worf’s advice is so klingon-centric that it’s useless. data’s got nothing. and riker’s advice is too effective, he casually seduces guinan for real while giving a basic demonstration on how to talk to a girl. which is quite the impressive feat, she’s like 3000 years old, she’s surely heard it all
unfortunately the governess doesn’t choose to transform into mädchen amick very much at all, and prefers to take the form of a scary monster that’s like jeff goldblum in the fly and a wookie mixed and it’s howling at wesley so frighteningly when he’s trying to innocently get to first base with this princess. but then the princess transforms into an ugly horrible monster too, to fight the governess, and comes to the realization that she has serious responsibilities as monarch of a brutally divided planet.
wesley is hurt that the girl he fell in love with was an illusion, and maybe angry that she didn’t pick mädchen amick’s form instead of a jennifer connelley knockoff, but he accepts the experience for what it was.

a federation ship explodes in the neutral zone due to apparent system failure. they were searching for a galactic rosetta stone. the enterprise starts experiencing minor system glitches while flying around trying to solve their mystery, and the ship starts actively fighting geordi. lavar has a lot of physical acting in this one
this mysterious seemingly-destroyed planet keeps sending up probes that will destroy a galaxy class ship shortly after scanning it. picard Data and worf beam down to the planet and discover ancient Stargate™ technology that is stuck on shuffle mode. picard orders worf and Data through the stargate onto the enterprise while he stayed behind to sabotage the technolgy so the romulans couldn’t use it for evil.
as the room is blowing up around him, picard is forced to step onto the bridge of the romulan warbird, which is in the middle of a self destruct sequence that cannot be aborted. the romulan captain is pleased to at least kill picard along with herself and her entire crew. he says, “not today” as obrien beams him back onto the enterprise

the gang discovers that the book ends by rich guys buying the casino and leaving town. Data is able to throw dice in a perfect conformation every time and they crush at craps, breaking the bank and buying the casino before walking out of the revolving doors

the enterprise comes across a federation shuttle drifting in space, containing an unconscious jean-luc picard. troi proclaims the unconscious man is as much our captain as our man himself. geordi discovers that it’s from 6 hours in the future, and the shuttle’s logs contain a warning that picard is the sole survivor of the enterprise’s destruction
picard starts second guessing his every decision as the dopplepicard regains consciousness and starts going through an unshakable routine that leads him to board a shuttle alone. picard figures out that to stop the enterprise being destroyed he has to end this time loop, so he shoots his doppleganger in the back with a phaser, killing him dead. yep, that solved it.

riker is being promoted to captain of his own ship, and part of the handover involves a briefing with a civilian attache. the civilian attache? riker’s father who he hasn’t seen in 15 years. riker wasn’t totally thrilled with the promotion in the first place, he’s only had a beard for half a season, but he’s even less interested now that his estranged dad is involved.
picard is genuinely stoked for riker. he’s a captain, of course he imagines riker wants to be a captain. although how great is it to be a captain? picard lives like a monk, praying at the altar of science and the federation. riker is probably worried that whatever extra work a captain does compared to the xo will cut into his pussy-crushing time. idk, kirk managed.
worf is upset that riker is leaving, and asks (kinda demands) to join him on the new ship. he’s feeling agitated because he’s culturally isolated as he reaches a milestone age in klingon tradition. wesley thoughtlessly appropriates klingon culture and throws worf a surprise party in the holodeck based on shit he read on wikipedia. luckily, worf really needs this and dives right in. the rite of ascension is exactly like a classic college fraternity hazing ritual except instead of cricket bats they’re supercharged ‘pain sticks’. at the end, exhausted, worf does his best kevin bacon impression and says, “thank you”
riker fights his dad in a future mma style that’s essentially blindfolded american gladiators in samurai armor. they work out their communication issues through violence and make a breakthrough. of course riker decides to stay on the enterprise.

Data catches a random message flying through space, it’s from a young alien girl on a planet not advanced enough to know about ET life. He gets involved in texting this underage girl and among the things she talks about is a imminent global catastrophe. Data brings this information to picard and picard tells him to immediately stop texting underage girls and they’ll see what they can do about the global catastrophe.
turns out the problem with the planet is they have too much dilithium, the special crystal that the federation uses for interstellar travel. a young george w bush actually wrote this episode in 1989. picard orders riker to help Data do a black ops infiltration of the planet as it’s exploding, and he saves his pen pal from being melted by lava. enterprise fixes the catastrophe from space without anyone knowing, and the new doctor wipes the little girl’s memory with standard federation medical science
