s5e99,100 All for One

young robert forster (twin peaks the return) shows up unannounced at robin’s nest. he’s not exactly a war buddy, the guys know him from nam as a reckless commando who got their real friends killed. he explains he needs combat veterans to do some war stuff in cambodia. they all act like they’re getting too old for this shit, but deep down they love it. next thing we know the boys are all on a plane ready to shoot guns at bad guys in a jungle just like the old days. even higgins!

good thing, too, because rick gets shot in their first encounter and higgins gives him a blood transfusion using a fresh bamboo stalk

not long after that, magnum, higgins and robert forster are captured by their nemesis. robert forster is tortured all night while higgins and magnum talk about how fucked they are with their necks tied to posts in a bamboo prison cell. thai resistance fighters free them before any of the main characters can get tortured tho

while half the crew is blowing up the enemy, rick falls in love with the young native woman assigned to nurse him back to health. tc separately befriends a young man and comes up with the same basic plan to save him from all this and bring him back to america, right after he gave rick a lecture about what a dumb idea that is.

well it wasn’t meant to be, because when a car backfires, rick shoots the young native woman’s father dead. and she isn’t really into him after that. tc’s young male companion decides to stay and fight for freedom. he dies as soon as the final battle starts.

robert forster was amazing as the commando driven by revenge. no wonder david lynch liked him for twin peaks.

s5e101 The Love-for-Sale Boat

the gang’s new friend mac, played by the actor who played the old character mac who was killed in a ferrari explosion 3 seasons ago but returned with a mustache as a con man this season, has a yacht for sale. and it comes complete with a crew of young asian women who it’s implied are trafficked sex slaves. rick takes out a 25%/week interest loan from icepick to buy it asap

one hour after opening his sexy boat business, he’s shut down by US marshals and told the boat was rented and is overdue back. new mac is long gone, and the japanese sex slaves have nowhere to go

higgins barges in to the guest house looking for magnum, and sees rick half naked getting massaged by the girls. he hears the shower running, and runs into the bathroom opening the shower door to confront magnum about this. inside the shower is one of the girls, and he’s embarrassed. the joke i guess is that if he saw magnum naked in the shower he wouldn’t have been embarrassed. higgins is apoplectic that slavery is being practiced at robin’s nest and throws them out. but he’s knocked unconscious and wakes up with rick gone and the girls caring for his every need. even alone, he still resists them. he spends the day teaching them a college level course on the philosophical meaning of freedom and slavery, starting with the magna carta.

notable lines:
rick: “i just don’t have enough room at home for all my slaves”

in the end, the yakuza come to re-kidnap the girls, and as they are being accosted on the yacht, magnum shows up with a bowl of lemons. he starts throwing lemons at the yakuza, and in the confusion the girls stage a slave uprising in bikinis, screaming “magna carta!” as they attack their yakuza masters.

robin masters hires magnum to track down a young girl, little alison. nobody expected little allison to be a sexually aggressive 18-year-old with gigantic breasts. amazingly, the genius writers couldn’t stretch out this plotline any further and little alison’s story ends before it really starts.

this week’s real story has magnum’s client ms jones hire him to track down a missing AI developer and i learned that artificial intelligence has been hyped as humanity’s next great breakthrough for over 40 years.

higgins hypnotizes someone for the third time this series, this time using a pocketwatch. every time he hypnotizes he dangles a different thing. after hypnotizing her to get information on the missing person, he pauses before waking her up from a trance. the viewer is naturally worried at this point that he’ll sexually assault the unconscious woman. no, his demands are for her to write down in detail little-known and devastating chess maneuvers, because her knowledge impressed him in a chess game earlier. still an invasion.

s5e104 The Man From Marseilles

magnum is hanging out with a famous french policeman who was the inspiration for many of robin masters’ stories. they’re out at a karaoke bar and after being separated for 2 minutes the frenchman shoots a guy in a back room. police book him but let him out immediately.

in their investigation, the frenchman seduces carol into giving up classified information about drug smugglers. his search for justice had driven him to operate outside the law, and magnum and carol catch him about to murder the drug kingpin with a poison syringe. they talk him out of it, but there’s a struggle and the frenchman accidentally syringes the bad guy in the heart. they let him go for that murder, too.

magnum is driving around with a rabbi clutching a torah that was just recovered after being lost in singapore in 1945. they’re stopped on the road and the torah is stolen in a carefully choreographed heist. the rabbi is super fired up about recovering it, and magnum agrees to help.

turns out there are rubies hidden inside the torah, but when the gangsters open it up they’re counterfeit. before this can be explained, the police show up and arrest the bad guys.

higgins is revealed to be a hero to the jews because he refused direct orders to fire on refugees entering palestine in 1946.

magnum is on a case looking for a runaway teen, and joins a prison chain gang. he hates it!

noticed another archer influence. they don’t do it as much as archer, but they’ll start a new scene as if it’s a direct response to the last line of the last scene. guy in prison is on the phone, says, “diana” and it cuts to TC asking rick “diana who?” as they’re investigating downtown. they’ve done this a few times but sparingly.

while in prison, magnum gets beat up by a group of men he caught doing crimes. for some reason, his enemies in prison solve the mystery and start a prison riot so the bad guy can escape. then they decide to tell magnum everything, and let him escape prison to chase after the guy.

tc and rick find a lead on the case, a stripper at a seedy club. they can’t confront her for reasons, magnum can’t go because he’s an escaped convict, so higgins goes to the strip club. he hates it!

Robin Masters bought a gigantic castle in England, and flies higgins and magnum over there to help set it up the way he likes it.

Magnum goes to visit his old friend in London and finds out he was just killed earlier that day crossing the street. Meanwhile, higgins is finding the majordomo for the castle to be unqualified and unprepared for the job. rick and tc independently fly themselves over to annoy the shit out of higgins even further, but tc gets stuck in Morocco on a layover. He starts off mad that he’s gonna miss the ballet, but falls in love with a wealthy African woman so he’s fine

Magnum’s dead friend thought he was a bit psychic, and magnum is getting visions the whole trip. He uses the visions to collect clues and stop an assassination of a foreign dignitary

Higgins reveals he hasn’t spoken to his family in 40 years, and can’t bring himself to even call. Suddenly a black bag is thrown over his head and he’s kidnapped. It’s magnum, and he’s bringing higgins to his ancestral home. Perth is in the north of Scotland and they were just in London, and magnum didn’t remove the bag until they were in front of the house, so it seems extreme. But higgins walks up, sees his dad, and they embrace.

magnum’s girlfriend from high school used to be extra ugly, but when she comes to visit him in hawaii she’s smoking hot. unfortunately she’s not just visiting, she’s hiring magnum to investigate a kidnapped dolphin. also there’s a ticking clock because the kidnappers strapped a bomb to its back and trained it to attack an african dictator’s yacht. if that wasn’t enough, higgins is on the yacht.
