yeah, i was thinking about how seasons 3 and 4 were the ratings peak for magnum pi, 22 million+ viewers for every episode, more than 2x game of thrones. and it’s so dumb. there are so many sloppy storylines that they wrap up in like 1 minute with some lazy nonsense. if a show with 22 million viewers today tried some of the shit magnum pi’s showrunners tried, there would be riots

s4e84 I, Witness

magnum is excited to watch the tigers play for the AL pennant, but he’s in hawaii so he’s waking up at 2am to watch it live on cable. but as the game is starting, breaking hawaii news interrupts to say the king kamehameha club has been robbed, and everybody except magnum was there. so it’s up to magnum to solve the case as they sit around a table and each recall their own version of the robbery. it’s like rashomon lol

the robbers are wearing halloween animal masks, and our friend, the very minor character keoki, who is mostly in the background but was named a couple times including in the baseball episode, well, he’s the inside man. the writers must have thought they were so clever. i can hear the shouting in the writers room now, “just make it a random guy! who cares!” but no, they revolutionized television by making keoki the mastermind.

higgins: “i thought that the robbery was in incredibly poor taste”

an absolute banger of an episode. we get to see how nuts our favorite characters are, and what they think of the other characters as they’re each recounting their perspective of the robbery.

I like how the 84th episode was about the 84 Tigers, but more importantly: man you just knocked out 84 episodes in the first week, that’s fucking awesome! And there are 168 hours in a week so let historians remember that you spent ~half the hours of an entire calendar row basking in the charismatic clit-flossing aloha glory of Thomas Sullivan Magnum IV

It’s a fine thing to see a man achieving his dream. But this isn’t just a marathon, it’s also a very fast race, like a dash or a steeplechase. And the Murder She Wrote crossover episode is still out there. Good luck! Tom Selleck was similarly devoted to Magnum P.I., and only through his integrity did our universe dodge bleak and irrevocable timelines such as this timeline. I don’t know what you are delivering the universe from but it feels pretty important—mahalo

PS I guess I’ll control-F but I wonder how many episodes have featured a riptide as a meaningful plot point? In the 1980s everyone was terrified of riptides. I would have set the o/u going in at 3.5 riptides

s5e85,86 Echoes of the Mind

8 years before basic instinct, sharon stone was in a 2-parter magnum pi episode. actually it’s a double double, she plays two parts in a two-parter. identical twin 25-year-old sharon stones and there IS a shower scene :vince2: and it’s like 85% magnum :vince3:

meanwhile higgins accidentally agrees to marry two women. the season just started and our bros are swimming in pussy :pitbull1:

well higgins’ crass half brother paddy mcguinness freaks out the duchess so much she calls off the wedding and leaves the island. and sharon stone turned out to be one twin with a split personality. she ends up shooting herself in the head in front of magnum and the episode ends right there :harold:

s5e89 Underworld

TC crashes his chopper into the water and is in a coma in the hospital. magnum suspects foul play so goes scuba diving to inspect the sunken helicopter. well, it’s clearly attempted murder. higgins is shot at, sending him careening his car into a tree and now he’s in the hospital too.

TC is finally shaken out of his coma after higgins wheels himself into his room and starts telling one of his longass war stories. i regret not transcribing all of higgins’ war stories because they’re all hilarious in one way or another. maybe next year i’ll go over the series again just for the higgins stories

agatha and the other society ladies are on their way back from a charity bake sale and find their bank is out of business, and their deposits for their effective altruism project are gone

meanwhile higgins’ cousin sally comes over from england and she’s a punk rocker, totally freaks out higgins. but because she’s family he tries to teach her elocution and manners so she can impress the family of a wealthy upper class english gentleman she intends to marry

notable lines:
“i can’t keep me H up!”

sally initially crushes it with the upper crust blue hairs but she drinks too much champagne and starts slipping into her naturally crass demeanor. higgins stepped away for 10 minutes and she’s pouring whole bottles of liquor into the punch bowl and singing shanties with the waiters. the future mother-in-law is disgusted, but higgins advocates for her anyway because he respects her for being herself

nevertheless, he doubles down on the finishing school bit and fully transforms sally into a phony baloney posh lady, appeasing everyone except the groom, who stands her up at the altar. higgins finally learns the lesson we all thought he learned the night before, but this time at the expense of this young woman’s future.

well it all kinda works out because her finance turned out to be the guy who stole customer deposits from his bank fraud scheme. she hits him over the head with a bottle and the gang catches him. she ends up staying on the island, tending bar in a british pub

the assistant DA, carol, is for sure magnum’s most frequent client. young john plachette in this one as the villain (larry david’s therapist who wears a thong at the beach)

higgins finally reveals his backstory of why he was expelled from his fancy boarding school. a friend’s prank paralyzed another student, and higgins was blamed. he didn’t inform on his friend, and was expelled. he joined the army the next day.

well his old school chums are coming to visit, and he’s been lying to them for decades, pretending he owns robin’s nest. when the school chums show up, the whole crew dresses up as staff to help higgins pull off the deception. agatha encourages him to be honest, but when the opportunity comes he decides to go with his boys and pretend to be wealthy.

but it doesn’t take long before higgins remembers the lesson he learned last week*, and decides to be honest about himself and his position. this shames his friend into revealing he paralyzed that kid all those years ago.

*joking. he doesn’t remember anything about last week. he learned it completely fresh and new and it’s just an unfortunate coincidence that he’s learning the same lesson two weeks in a row
