big storm is approaching the islands. higgins is dressed up in paddington bear’s raincoat so you know it’s gonna be a big one
magnum saves someone from an accident and they’re very cagey, they won’t even reveal their name. magnum then invites them to robin’s nest to live with him because he’s worried about their overall safety. obviously this person is a beautiful woman. if it were a man in this exact situation, there would be no reason to even ask his name and learn that he’s being cagey. it’d be:
[saves man from drowning]
“u alright mate?”
“yeah thanks”
“see ya around”
[end]
but okay, magnum is attracted to broken women after his wife faked her own death to become a spy and his last girlfriend killed herself in front of him. let’s suspend belief and pretend previous episodes matter now.
evidence that previous episodes matter now:
-magnum with this woman
-tc briefly mentioned excitement about ballet. it was established in season 1 he considers himself a ballet aficionado
evidence previous episodes still don’t matter and all characters are completely developed from day 1:
-this woman has lots of light blue makeup and big curly hair, basically a 10/10 for 1985. magnum would go for her no matter what because he’s top alpha on the islands
-the storyline with tc in the season opener had zero resolution and the ballet thing was just a throwaway line, it wasn’t actual character motivation
anyway this chick is married and shortly after magnum bangs her the husband comes home and they have an awkward interaction where he pretends he was upstairs checking the security system because of storm events. husband doesn’t buy it at all and threatens magnum with a gun
after doing some investigating, magnum finds out the woman was playing him the whole time, so he comes to her house and threatens HER with a gun. the husband comes home and then threatens magnum’s manhood, saying magnum doesn’t have it in him to kill him, so magnum kills him.
or so we’re led to believe. actually, magnum and the husband were working together at this point and he was lying on the ground pretending to be dead for 5 full minutes while she did the villain thing and explains her master plan. busted!

magnum gets a job doing security investigations at a hotel, and is working full time with his own office there and everything. higgins visits the office and acts like he doesn’t miss him.
magnum is starting to enjoy having a boring regular job when he gets hit on the back of the head and is knocked unconscious. war. war never changes.
also, a famous jewel thief is sending taunting letters to the hotel in the days leading up to an expensive jewelry convention.
after getting into a gunfight in the kitchen and smashing a bunch of cars in the parking structure, magnum is fired from his hotel security consultant job. but guess what the twist is? the hotel boss was the bad guy all along. the whole gang choreographs an elaborate distraction to catch him, but then weirdly tc’s part was to scream and leap on top of two guards and wrestle them. not very covert.

i feel like i can easily watch another 100 episodes at this pace, and i’m worried i won’t be able to readjust to life without 12 hours of new episodes of magnum pi a day
i remember watching this show a lot, but on this speedrun with very few exceptions they all feel brand new to me. i think a big part of that is how dumb the plots/endings are. they’re not memorable because they’re super dumb. like i remembered the #1 and #2 episodes pretty well, because they’re actual stories instead of goofy nonsense with an ending they probably wrote on the set with 10 minutes of sunlight left that day
the gang is on a million-dollar treasure hunt this episode. the whole town is treasure hunting, basically. the gang finds the treasure but are ambushed by a woman with a gun. it feels like all is lost until TC FLIES HIS CHOPPER IN REAL LOW. the chopper downdraft blows the million dollars in cash all over the woods and waterfall. one by one, our extended crew of good guys leap off the waterfall into the water below and grab the wet bills laughing hysterically.

I don’t know why but I hope Dick McWilliams doesn’t finish last. Then again, that means you’d have to watch at best one episode worse than Dick McWilliams and maybe nobody deserves that.
I was born in 1980. I remember catching some Magnum episodes during my childhood but didn’t remember much about it other than I enjoyed it. I really just love 80s pop culture and entertainment period, so this thread has been really fun for me. My family thinks I’m weird. Gonna start blasting these off tomorrow. Happy New Year!
Started last night. Really appreciated how the series starts with Magnum already living in Hawaii and doing private investigation work while living at Robin’s nest. No fish out of water type crap or plot device needed to put him there. It’s explained through voice over by Magnum where he lives and what he does right away and the plot of the very first case also serves to establish Magnum’s back story. Tom Magnum using the word “coke” while talking about cocaine about 2 dozen times, barging into a Naval Captain’s office and physically threatening him, driving all over Hawaii in a Ferrari. It’s just hitting all the notes for me. Thanks again for doing this. I’m gonna enjoy my own Magnum journey now
