s3e59 Legacy From a Friend

during a shirtless volleyball game, magnum finally reveals he has a good friend other than TC and rick, a lifeguard named marcus. well don’t get too attached to marcus because he’s already dead.

as magnum investigates the murder, he gets pulled into the criminal underground of hawaii, and scammed by a meter maid from cincinatti.

it’s starting to bother me how “pulling guns on the bad guys” solves the issue. these gangsters were driving magnum into the woods to murder him. they’re gonna just forget about it now? they did the same shit when the sicilian mafia came to town. they pulled guns on high-ranking mafioso and they just left? they forgot about it?

well, i guess they helped the sicilians recover the necklace, so maybe they’d forgive pulling guns. and maybe these gangsters went to jail, maybe that’s how. a lot of this is left unsaid. i’m worried about magnum’s long-term safety but these guys are thinking week-to-week. that’s a vietnam veteran’s mindset, the show is designed to make you FEEL like you’re a vietnam vet turned slacker PI.

s3e60 Two Birds of a Feather

a texan pilot who flew tours in vietnam lands a tiny plane in robin masters’ tide pool after flying direct from california. he was delivering it for an asian businessman who loves baths.

notable lines:
"you know, my grandpappy said that something good always comes out of something bad. Why, he said it right up to the day they hung him.
“hung him??”
“even then he was right. you see a widow woman, she collected the reward money.”

well it turns out our friend is a target for assassination by the bathing businessman. he seems like an honest guy who doesn’t want to hurt anybody, and his wife is leaving him for the rich banker who foreclosed on their farm, so we’re all rooting for him. it’s not explained why they wanted to kill the pilot, but he dropped napalm in nam at the beginning of the episode so this is karma coming back at him?

jimmy doohan from star trek in this one. there’s a hurricane outside, and higgins is hosting a fancy dinner with multiple minor royals including a baseball player named duke. all of a sudden, magnum lets in some folks from the rain, and they pull guns and start a robbery that devolves into a hostage situation. and one of the robbers is going into labor.

but the robbers are foiled easily enough. the REAL threat is one of the royals at the dinner is planning to kill robin masters! so the crew develops a plot to capture the would-be assassin.

s4e64 Home From The Sea

magnum is out surfskiing 3 miles from shore when he loses his gear because of reckless speedboaters. he tries swimming to shore, but gets caught in the rip, so he has to paddle and wait for rescue to stay alive the entire episode

magnum remembers his dad training him to do endurance swimming, and it’s the first appearance of magnum’s dad’s rolex gmt master. magnum hasn’t ever worn a rolex until this episode, but they do a flashback where he’s wearing it in vietnam. so they’re retconning this rolex for the character, basically because tom selleck loves his rolex and demanded he get to wear it on the show.

rick is on a yacht fishing trip with a smoking hottie, attracting sharks near magnum’s position when he’s treading water for hour 13.

i like how higgins has at least three identical half brothers he doesn’t give a shit about, but he feels psychic pain when magnum is in trouble

magnum is out there for 20 hours before rick also gets a psychic feeling to search for magnum in the open ocean, and he’s treading water for another hour in the dark before tc and higgins fly up over him and higgins jumps down into the water with a lifepreserver.

loved how magnum finds his motivation by remembering his swimming endurance training sessions with his dad, and the moment when he beat his own record, seeing a uniformed man walking up on the beach behind his mom, thinking it’s his dad back from war, but it was the message from the navy that his dad wasn’t coming back.

a private investigator from an older generation cramps magnum’s style this episode as they’re both hired to solve the same mystery. he’s going to cockfights and pulling guns on informants, he’s so not magnum.

interestingly, luther gillis hijacks the show halfway into it, including taking over the narration. this guy radiates main character energy so much the show recognizes his power. this is like some kind of rick and morty meta battle episode.

rick actually has a friend that he’s taller than. a catburglar little person who claims to be cia as he ropes him into a scheme. this story is like 90% rick while magnum is in the hospital with two broken arms because he tried extreme sports to impress a woman.

this episode featured one of the earliest media interpretations of the internet. an asian child in the hospital bed next to magnum has a device you place a phone receiver onto that allows a nearby keyboard to do cia google searches on a nearby television. “you just need the code word”, the child explains

s4e68 Limited Engagement

magnum is working undercover as a clerk at a 24-hour grocery store, and he’s getting clowned on by teenagers and old ladies all day.

magnum follows some of the old ladies home and they live with a bunch of other old people in absolute poverty. they’re being threatened with eviction, and when magnum recognizes one of the residents as a former baseball player, he decides to help them.

magnum’s way of helping them is to get higgins to host a bingo night for his society friends. the grand prize of the bingo day was 10k and TC wins it. amazingly, instead of accepting the money because he needs it, he donates it to the old folks. the old ladies hoped they could raise 3k, but they end up getting 40k.

well here comes the twist. the two old ladies are con artists and masters of disguise. they hand over the 40k to their ginger pimp, who demands they do one last heist. they’re the ones heisting all these 711s magnum is investigating. magnum catches them red handed and they confess to stealing to help the old folks in their shared home. magnum suggests they use the 40k to pay back the grocery chain what they stole, but the store manager calls the cops, forcing them to escape using disguises.

i’m just imagining how in the early 1980s the real estate market was such that $40,000 could buy a huge mansion in hawaii, large enough for a dozen people to live independently inside it.

higgins is a brave hero. he sees a woman being accosted in an alley by two men and he intervenes. they don’t take him seriously, of course, and only leave because they see a policeman across the street, but higgins didn’t know that.

higgins tries to woo this duchess so delicately, he does it by leaving an unsigned note asking her to a romantic dinner. but she thinks the note was from magnum, and shows up at magnum’s place for chili dogs and baseball. and she loves it. absolutely heartbreaking.

magnum: “just explain the mixup”
higgins: “i’d rather face a firing squad”

magnum fights like 6 guys on a boat and higgins handles himself pretty well with a cane. the duchess still doesn’t get it, and despite explaining higgins planned the rescue mission, she thanks and kisses magnum. at the end of the episode, magnum tries to turn off the duchess by acting like a jerk, giving higgins a chance to win her affection. it kinda works.

Robin Masters is down like 10 million in a heads up poker game against a pornographer. in a double or nothing gambit, he wagers the hawaiian estate on the result of a coed softball game between their respective employees. magnum plays second base and higgins is the coach.

initially, the boys want to lose so they can live with these playboy bunnies at the estate full time. but the villainous pornographer makes it clear he’s going to fire magnum. pressure is on.

then magnum sees the opposing team, and it’s all big-boobed models who seem to have no softball skills at all. pressure is off.

all of a sudden, though, the villain millionaire brings in 10 ringers. pro ballers. the pressure is back on. the simpsons steal this idea 10 years later. but maybe they’re both stealing it from real life when some actual millionaire pulled this scam

rick and tc get on base, and magnum is up to bat. big swing, tc and rick come home, higgins is third base coach screaming for him to stop, but magnum tries for the inside-the-park home run, and is thrown out at home.

as magnum and higgins are packing up their shit, they discover the villain uses marked decks in his poker games. robin masters shows up for the last 2 seconds of the episode to threaten to reveal the cheating if the bet isn’t nullified.

magnum is chasing his dream of spending the week attending tigers home games and stuffing his face with coney dogs, so we’re following TC’s island adventure this episode.

an injured boxer from a vietnam unit that saved TC’s life is two fights away from completing his contract for lifechanging money, so TC agrees to fight on his behalf. but when he gets there, he finds out it’s bare knuckle brawls. he’s ready to walk out of there but the guy’s daughter is begging him to fight and they’re gonna be homeless if he doesn’t complete this fighting contract. that plus the vietnam stuff, TC can’t refuse.

alan trammel and lou whitaker do cameos as themselves in a detroit bar and magnum doesn’t recognize them.

in this christmas episode, the boys get into helicopter trouble and find themselves stranded on a deserted island.

rick falls into quicksand and imagines his own funeral where the eulogies are all insanely glowing. magnum and tc show up and tell him there’s no quicksand in hawaii and to stand up. rick is embarrassed but survives

meanwhile a couple brainiacs in the navy decide it’ll be a good idea to shell the entire island today, instead of just shooting targets like they usually do

higgins weaves a beautiful hat out of reeds within the first few minutes on the island, and crafts a sailboat out of the wreckage of a plane that he names the zeus apollo 2, which sinks almost immediately

the shelling hasn’t even started yet, but higgins already feels all is lost, so he starts writing his will. he writes that he wants his matchstick replica bridge on the river kwai to be left to magnum. then realizes they’re both stranded on the island, so scratches magnum’s name out. then writes that he’s leaving all his possessions and the bridge model to his dogs. fucking everything he does breaks my heart, this guy

somehow while trying to survive, magnum builds a christmas tree complete with shining star and ornaments. the four of them have christmas dinner on the beach, and after dark the navy starts firing on them. luckily tc fixes the chopper and flies them out of there just before they’re all killed
