I’ve never seen the show. Would’ve thought that he’d be having a lot more sex.
1981 mimi rogers slept over last season. not too bad
Now I’m not the sorta man who tells someone how they should live out their dream, but these are important details.
s3e48 Foiled Again
higgins used to be an expert fencer, in primary school. a posh english nemesis from childhood comes to the island to challenge him. he’s super arrogant about it so it’s not so sad when higgins electrocutes him to death in front of a crowd of onlookers.

Wait, wat?
yeah in front of his wife and kid, too. but it’s fine because they hated the guy. the son was the one who rigged the fencing foil to kill him. higgins was in jail for a day but robin’s richguy lawyers got him out of it
Getting “how did you send your Christmas?” messages from family.
I’m reluctant to admit it was mostly me splitting between reading chapters of Moby Dick and recaps of Magnum PI episodes.
s3e49 Mr White Death
episode starts out with a mafia hit on an unknown character getting a shave in a barber shop. next scene we see magnum, tc and rick at an underground mexican wrestling match. our boys get in a fight with some cholos, and get saved by an over-the-hill wrestler, mr white death, played by ernest borgnine. he has an ask, he wants to see his estranged son, so magnum agrees to help.
while hanging out at robin’s nest, it is revealed that higgins is a pro wrestling aficionado and wrestled under the name “punky”. anyway the white death used to be a boxer, and he’s the guy who did the mafia hit at the beginning of the episode (30 years ago). so the mafia is after this guy, which is bad news for magnum.
in the end, they help the white death flee. he says goodbye to his son but they agree they can never speak, because the mafia will find him again. i guess the moral of the story is your life is more important than your relationship with your kids. thanks, 1980s

robin masters is hosting a pro-am tennis tournament, and a young hot tennis star is facing off against an older more experienced female tennis pro. magnum is in love with the older pro, but gets paired up with the younger one to play mixed doubles in the tournament, and she falls in love with him after he saves her life from an attempted hit-and-run.
rick hits it off with his european doubles partner after mocking her accent, and TC hilarious as a tennis coach. his rivalry with higgins (belichick-style spying on the opposing practice) is perfection.

magnum’s client wants to throw her dad’s ashes into the uss arizona memorial. but the navy won’t let her because her dad was awol on december 7th 1941. and he was awol for being a dad too, she says she only saw him four times in her life.
anyway it’s kind of a fight for justice against anti-japanese racism, because he had an excuse to be off base but they didn’t like that he had a japanese girlfriend. strange at the end instead of dumping out the ashes, she throws the sealed box of ashes into the water.

a lady vietnam vet struggles with sexism and mental health stigma as she changes careers from nurse to doctor. reporters are enemy of the people, implying she’s a murderer with ptsd (they called it delayed stress in the 80s)
magnum discovers a man floating face down in a swimming pool. cuts to a shot from underwater, showing a man face down in the water with bubbles coming out of his nose and he’s moving his face, like grimacing. next shot is of a body bag. the guys making this show were having fun in hawaii, they don’t have time for reshoots
notable lines:
magnum (voice over): “i knew if he had a revolver, he only had six shots. of course, if he had an automatic, he could have seven. or eight. then again, he could have one of those 13-shot automatics. or he could have two guns. oh well.”

Wow I’d expect a guy named Magnum played by Tom Selleck to be better at estimating an 80s tv villain’s likely armament.
s3e53 Of Sound Mind
an eccentric millionaire patriarch is squandering a vast family fortune, and is killed by probably his butler and close family. at the execution of the will, it’s revealed that he shafts his family and is leaving his 50 million dollar estate to magnum.
notable lines:
higgins: “if there is the slightest validity to what i am witnessing, i can now be certain that our creator is not only indifferent, he is cruel.”
his first night in the mansion, he watches a tape the old man left him through the estate lawyer. in the tape, the man says he was murdered, and it’s up to magnum to find whoever did it and bring them to justice.
this is what the squad looks like one day after magnum becomes rich:

s3e55 Basket Case
Magnum and TC are coaching rival little league basketball teams, when a bad news bears tomboy ringer named willie (dana hill) shows up and clowns everyone with and1 streetball skills. but she’s being followed by some weirdo, so she joins magnum’s team for protection. well, turns out she’s an orphan and her foster parents are abusive con artists who pressure her into running a scam against the estate.
meanwhile, tc gets mad when he finds out the gambling odds on magnum’s team have improved, so he comes by robin’s nest to give magnum a piece of his mind. the two of them play one-on-one with rick as the referee, but zeus and apollo bite the ball (likely on higgins’ orders), ending the game prematurely.
notable lines:
[higgins and magnum are having a private candlelit dinner with the orphan girl, who’s presumably like 12 years old, and higgins is pouring her wine]
magnum: wait. isn’t she a little young?
higgins: the Devigne knows no age limit. half a glass.
at the dinner, willie is overwhelmed by how kind these two grown men are towards her, so she blows up her foster parents’ scam by inviting them to the living room, where they discover willie’s foster parents loading antiques into sacks. magnum and higgins aren’t surprised, though. they replaced all the antiques that afternoon with forgeries, because they knew the parents were burglars.
now, i don’t want to believe magnum and higgins made a knowing trade of fake antiques for a romantic evening with a 12-year-old girl, but it didn’t seem like they really had a plan for catching the foster parents aside from asking them to leave.
