a new ladyfriend at robin’s nest is a card mechanic who loves ripping off gangsters in high stakes poker games. what could go wrong?
yep, magnum and the woman end up stranded on a deserted island hiding from murderous gangsters with a helicopter. higgins rick and tc were all told that magnum died out there, so they get drunk together at the estate. but in their drunken states, they decide it can’t be true and go out in their own helicopter to find magnum.
but the lady card mechanic turned out to be a SOVIET SPY THE WHOLE TIME. she was on the boat stealing microfilm! she didn’t give a fuck about the money because she’s a communist! so she sabotaged the transponder to signal a russian submarine instead of the coast guard, and threatened to blow up magnum with a flare gun when he tried to light a signal flare.
TC and the boys saved their asses in the end and they finish it off with a big long helicopter chase scene where the other helicopter has machine guns but magnum is able to take their helicopter out with a single flare gun shot.
notable lines:
“I can kill men with these hands”
“why bother when you can destroy them with that mouth?”
^^a completely non-sexual exchange, if you can believe it

some dude who went to nam around the same time as magnum asks him to track down his girlfriend who went missing in hawaii. but he’s a liar, he’s another nut who was doing an unrelated hit
higgins is interviewing a guy to see if he’s the right material to join the private country club. one of his pointed questions is: who do you pay first, your tailor or your gambling debt? and he liked the answer to pay the gambling debt first. shows how the rich have a sense of class solidarity. guess what? higgins has an identical twin half brother with a texas accent and country sensibilities, and we’re meeting him this episode. his name is elmo ziller. higgins can’t stand him, so he’s moving to a hotel across the island for the duration of elmo’s stay.
notable lines:
higgins: “coexistence in even remotely the same environs with elmo is aesthetically corrupting and intellectually life-threatening. you, however, are a perfect match”

That’s it? What kind of slacker description is that? I feel like you might not be taking this seriously enough.
This episode making the top 3, list is legit.
s3e41,42 Did You See The Sunrise
in the present, TC drops magnum off 6 miles off the coast alone with a paddle and surfski. on his way back to town, he picks up an old war buddy visiting hawaii. but it turns out he’s not just visiting, he’s fleeing… fleeing from their greatest nemesis, a russian officer named ivan who captured and tortured the crew in vietnam, and has now followed them to hawaii 10 years after the war because they’re the only prisoners of his to ever escape his evil clutches.
lotta really dark flashback scenes from when magnum and TC were tortured as POWs in nam. ivan uses the n word really viciously toward TC. they’re not pulling any punches on this one.
well it turns out their old war buddy was working for the kgb the whole time, drugging and brainwashing TC to act as a manchurian candidate. and now they’re activating him to do a helicopter attack!
notable lines:
Ivan: “I have a plane to catch. If you are going to shoot me, do it now. You won’t, you can’t. I know you, Thomas. I had you for three months at Dak Wai. I know you better than your mother. Your sense of honor and fair play. Oh, you could shoot me if I was armed and coming after you, but like this? Thomas, never. Goodbye, Thomas. Dasvidaniya.”
magnum: “Ivan…”
Ivan: “Yes?”
magnum: “Did you see the sunrise this morning?”
Ivan: “Yes. Why?”

higgins gets a crate delivered and it’s got a japanese woman in it! she married a white man and was shunned, so she escaped to hawaii, finding higgins-san because he is internationally renown as a man of great honor.
but then the twist: she’s not who she says she is. she’s who she says she is’s sister! aha! an assassin, obviously. good thing one of our boys is an expert helicopter pilot, or showing up out of nowhere and shooting guns at the bad guys would be just a little less surprising.

ian mcshane is back, this time as a new character, an old war buddy of higgins who participated in the very brutal massacre. don’t worry, higgins wasn’t involved in the massacre directly.
magnum tricks higgins into quarantining with him for african hemorrhagic fever, forcing the two to become odd couple roommates for a week.
notable lines:
higgins: “there are two ways of approaching this: the adult way or the child’s way”

magnum wakes up in an alternate reality where all the characters are the same but they’re in the 1930s. magnum is completely lucid so he resists the story at every turn. when he finally accepts it as his reality, he wakes up in 1982. but he solved the murder from 50 years earlier! because magnum pi follows the david lynch rule of television dreams. if a character on a tv show dreams, they can receive information from outside the tv show, from other realities including the reality of the tv show writer, who knows who the murderer is. david lynch thinks we can all do this in real life too, through transcendental meditation.
