magnum is in LA and he’s talking about how his dream is to have a wife and kids. strange, because the last 6 seasons make me think his dream is to be a beach bum. he’s 40 and is going through a midlife crisis. he’s in LA doing like bodyguard stuff for a beautiful young stand up comic. she comes back to his hotel room, and she’s begging to stay the night, and he reluctantly throws a pillow and sheets on the couch for her.
but when he wakes up, he finds her shot dead in the bathroom, and that’s the mystery. oh yeah and dana delaney is back. magnum has hitmen with machine guns following him around the city and shooting at him, blowing up his rental car. so he walks through the los angeles forest in the rain to dana delaney’s house. they immediately hit it off, sexually. and can’t keep their hands off each other for the rest of the double episode
meanwhile back on hawaii, tc is solving his own mystery. one of tc’s passions is helping out the underprivileged neighborhood kids; he’s still helping them even after the clubhouse got bulldozed. that’s what ropes him into this drug ring. it’s him and lieutenant tanaka, and it’s a winning team i didn’t even know i wanted. TC and tanaka absolutely should have been the spinoff. it’d be a great spinoff because if you get tc you automatically get the helicopter, which is one of the top 5 characters on the show. it goes:
higgins
magnum
tc
the helicopter
rick
during a car chase, magnum accidentally asks dana delaney to marry him and after they capture the bad guys she says yes. when magnum gets back to hawaii he gets a phone call at the airport and dana delaney is at a beach house in california letting him know basically that he’s delusional for thinking he could lock down a hot piece of ass like dana delaney, queen of the 80s

I watched these episodes. Dana Delaney has some good moments but for the most part I thought she played to the level of her co-star. It’s for the best that her character didn’t follow Magnum to Hawaii else China Beach might not have happened and I would never have heard of her.
I thought about doing a China Beach review thread but it wouldn’t work because for one thing, it’s not available for streaming and probably never will be due to music licensing problems. The bigger problem is I can’t write as entertainingly as bg, but I’ll just go with the first thing.
episode starts out with a bank robbery. but after the robbers have the money, one of them starts murdering everyone in the bank with a shotgun. a deaf artist is the only surviving witness. magnum gets involved in the mystery and brings her back to robin’s nest, where higgins reveals he’s an expert with american sign language. as they’re hitting it off talking about art and painting she makes it clear she’s interested in fucking magnum
coincidentally and for other reasons entirely, in the next scene higgins dresses up like magnum and does a forced american accent while following a lead on the killers
magnum meets this week’s client working as a waitress at the club. she used to be a hooker and magnum gets into a beach fight with some middle aged white guys while defending her honor. his mission is to find her sister (also a prostitute).
LOTS of prostitute puns and little jokes but magnum treats all women with respect, he doesn’t fall for it.

ep starts out in black and white as our characters play out a story in 1940s pulp noir style. magnum is daydreaming. he’s at a private investigator conference getting a local award for best regional PI, and luther gillis is giving a terrible speech. as he’s about to get his award, that french rogue policeman drops dead on stage. magnum and luther team up to solve the mystery!
lieutenant tanaka reveals he takes his vacations in detroit too. so asian john wayne is the detective in charge. we’re bringing back all the old characters who kinda worked.
notable lines:
luther gillis: “hey. it’s me. sorry to barge in like this but some wimp just shot me”
after a huge firefight, all the main characters are horribly injured except magnum and higgins, and they’re all in the same hospital room when magnum finally gets to hold his award. he starts giving his acceptance speech and a nurse bumps him from behind and he throws it into the air, shattering it because it was one of those glass awards. he really wanted that award.

higgins, rick and tc are all simultaneously out of town for the weekend, leaving magnum home alone (higgins even took the dogs). will he enjoy it skisurfing all day and stuffing his face with milk and fig newtons all night watching live baseball at 3am? nope, he’s getting audited by the irs and he’s a slacker who keeps TERRIBLE records but for some reason still tries to deduct a ton of expenses.
even though the auditor is a beautiful woman in a navy uniform, we luckily don’t spend too much time watching magnum fumble with receipts. because there’s a SERIAL MURDERER on the island stalking prostitutes and making direct phone calls to magnum taunting him with clues. very getable clues. magnum goes to the police immediately and they mock him for not gifting them a slam dunk case, literally laughing in his face, these cops suck. tanaka would never behave this way.
prostitute murders start happening and the police begrudgingly start working with magnum, but the killer knows exactly how long it takes to trace a phone call, and always cuts the call short. magnum picks up his rolex and holds it in front of him every time he gets a phone call anyway, probably cause it’s a sick rolex.
genesis is playing throughout the entire second and third acts at full volume as magnum wordlessly pieces together the mystery.
the killer turns out to be a deranged “stan” who doesn’t even have a mustache, but he’s absolutely obsessed with magnum. then the final standoff is kinda weird, he’s 40 feet away from magnum, magnum has a gun, and he threatens him with a knife. anyway magnum shoots him.
notable lines:
“if you don’t shoot me, he dies, and i win. if you do shoot me… i still win”

magnum’s ex wife michelle is back (the one who faked her own death to become a deep cover spy inside vietnam’s military). but just to drop off her 5-year-old daughter with magnum while she goes off on some spy mission. the little girl only speaks french and vietnamese, so only higgins can communicate with her.
uncle magnum’s best attempt at babysitting involves feeding the girl chili dogs and fig newtons. but he quickly dumps her on higgins while he ferraris around the island trying to figure out what his ex wife is up to. toxic? no! thoughtful.
clues start piling up that magnum is likely this girl’s real father, and in his final conversation with michelle, he gets let off the hook to maintain his bachelor lifestyle with a non-answer. michelle and the kid go into some kind of military spy witness protection program and i imagine things are gonna happily reset by the start of the next episode.

magnum breaks into robin’s nest’s security room to use the computer to play a video game he borrowed from TC. it’s a wicked game that destroys the game disk if you lose. magnum loves roguelikes! who doesn’t?
in trying to salvage the $59 gamedisk, magnum accidentally formats the main computer drive, deleting higgins’ memoir of his military campaign in new dehli. i liked learning that AAA videogames have cost $60 for forty straight years.
things escalate into a prank war between magnum and higgins. first higgins has magnum arrested for grand theft auto. then magnum destroys higgins’ prized flower that blooms once every hundred years or something. then higgins decapitates magnum’s rubber chicken and leaves it in his bed godfather style.
magnum fills the antique cannon with cement, higgins gives away all of magnum’s stuff to charity, and magnum blows up the matchstick bridge over the river kwai with remote explosives on higgins’ desk right in front of him.
higgins and magnum end up stuck in an elevator in a building that’s minutes away from being demolished. while they’re stuck together, magnum finally confronts higgins about how nobody believes his war stories, and higgins is very offended. during the argument, magnum gets suspicious that higgins is robin masters’ ghost writer, and eventually accuses him of being robin masters himself. even though they’ve both met robin masters on multiple occasions. magnum says the robin he met was a hired actor who has the voice of orson welles, who was the actual voice of robin masters in the show.
magnum ends the episode confidently believing higgins is the real robin masters.
notable lines:
“Seige of the Seventh Galaxy is not a toy. it is designed for the adult who yearns for the risk and challenge of true-life intergalactic combat”

he played a text-based dungeon adventure game in an earlier episode that also immolated after his character died, but i thought it was because magnum pushed the wrong button on the computer machine. and as everyone who has used computers in the 1980s knows, that kind of thing can happen if you press one wrong button. your whole computer can be destroyed.
ep starts out with higgins driving a car with 3 old ladies, including a young jessica walter (relatively young. she’s still old but she’s the youngest i’ve ever seen her). some maniac in a pickup is trying to pass them on a windy 2-lane mountain road, and higgins handles it so poorly. he speeds up as the guy is passing him, then when he gets tailgated higgins moves into the oncoming lane, but maintains speed with the guy. so he gets bumped around and run off the road but i feel like he ran himself off the road tbh.
this is the murder-she-wrote magnum-pi crossover spectacular. featuring a very sexual jessica walter.
there’s some missing persons, an attempted murder, and murder-she-wrote starts finding clues, but magnum pays little heed to her theories probably because of rampant 1980s sexism.
magnum solves the mystery/threat by shooting a guy. bet you won’t see THAT on murder she wrote!
notable lines
jessica walter (whatever her very sexual character’s name was): “i have been in these clothes since yesterday”
catty old lady friend (not murder she wrote): “i doubt it”
