s7e138 Missing Melody

so it turns out this whole time, TC has had a son and daughter living with their mother on the mainland. unfortunately, the daughter is kidnapped is soon as they get off the plane in hawaii, and the son is all mad at TC for not being there for them. and i’m mad too! i swear TC never even MENTIONED that he had 2 kids in 137 episodes.

the kidnappers demand a huge sum of money, hundreds of thousands, and TC isn’t a wealthy man so he starts setting up a deal to quickly sell his helicopter(!!). but higgins steps up and starts insisting to robin’s bankers that they float the cash. this makes magnum suspicious once again that higgins is secretly robin masters all along.

for some reason, TC was lying to his family for years pretending he owned robin’s nest and the ferrari. not explicitly lying, but basically the 1980s version of posting photos of himself on instagram with all that stuff. it put him in an awkward spot in front of his son ex wife and her new husband, and probably was the cause of the kidnapping.

it ends up being an inside job, the aunt or something has a gambling problem and set it up. but the kidnappers still demand the money, so the guys give them a suitcase of robin masters’ cash and follow them home, beat them up and rescue TC’s daughter.

s7e139 Death of the Flowers

carol’s hairdo reminds me to be grateful that hair technology has progressed great leaps in the last 40 years. she’s the main client this episode and they’re investigating this judge who’s been acting weird lately and shafting the DA in attempted criminal prosecutions because of “the constitution” and the “bill of rights”. don’t worry, magnum’s on the case.

they catch him doing some shady shit, confront him about it, and leave. the next morning the judge is DEAD. tanaka is calling it a suicide but carol doesn’t buy it. and it all leads to implicate rick’s father figure, the capo mafioso icepick. rick insists icepick has been clean for years but he’s gotten machine guns from him and took out a shark loan directly from him once to buy that slave boat, so idk why he thinks icepick wouldn’t be in on this shady business.

icepick and his wife are arrested in the end, and rick is there looking all him all disappointed. you knew he was a gangster, rick! REMEMBER! REMEMBER THE PREVIOUS EPISODES!

s7e140 Autumn Warrior

higgins is taking a multiracial group of minimum security prisoners camping for the weekend as a public service charity thing. unfortunately, the prisoners turn the tables by killing a guard and begin hunting higgins through the jungle like an animal.

higgins isn’t an easy poach, though. he’s deftly hiding and setting up traps immediately. he’s kevin mccallistering the entire jungle.

TC and magnum land on the island because higgins isn’t answering their short-wave radio hails. as soon as they land they find the dead guard and get back to the helicopter to see it’s been disabled by the escaping prisoners. they split up and TC does CPR on a prisoner higgins captured and dragged into a cave. magnum gets captured by the other two and is getting beat up for not knowing how to fly a helicopter when higgins throws a net on the most evil prisoner (the white one).

it starts off like a full golden age of cinema experience in black and white with a scrolling text explaining the backstory as it fades into color. all our characters are playing fresh new roles in yet another 1940s period piece. for some reason these moronic writers were absolutely fascinated by a time that was 40 years past. idiots!

magnum is a PI who wears a suit and smokes, higgins has a texas accent, and they all have glamorously beautiful girlfriends. after solving the old timey mystery magnum wakes up from sleeping on top of the covers in his tigers hat and short shorts and reveals he’s been up all night writing a novel of the story we just watched.

magnum is getting helicopter flying lessons from TC and when they land TC gets hit in the chest by a stray bullet. magnum needs to solve the mystery AND learn how to fly a helicopter in under 6 weeks so he can take a short-term high-paying investigator job in oaklahoma

somehow the cartel starts attacking robin’s nest and the crew fights them off with machine guns as dozens of armed men storm the estate, scarface style. and it’s all because new mac was fooling around down mexico way pulling scams. magnum and him end up in a plane and once it’s in the air mac reveals he’s been shot and loses consciousness. it’s up to magnum to fly and land this plane, but he’s been training to fly helicopters! and he’s not even good at that! thankfully higgins is in the control tower and has his own headset so he can berate magnum throughout the landing.

s7e143 Solo Flight

Magnum goes hiking up a volcano toward a mysterious goal. he’s having flashbacks of his dad from the banger episode where he was stuck paddling in the open ocean all night. he’s freeclimbing very sheer rockfaces, he’s beasting it. he finally finds a crashed ww2 military plane up there, and decides it’s up to him to solve its island mystery.

so he’s playing around, sitting inside the cockpit, when it tips over, pinning his legs to the ground. also a poisonous bug bit his neck. so it’s kind of a retread of the lost in the ocean episode but with rock climbing and archeology.

magnum emotionally connects with a nearby fly trapped in a spider web, and struggles with vietnam/trapped-out-in-the-ocean flashbacks. he starts talking to the pinup cartoon lady painted on the plane and begins taking off his belt. my thought before he even took his belt off was to have one last wank and then die, but he’s tying off his leg to stop the bleeding.

after getting rained on all night, his arms are covered in mud, but his rolex is as shiny and perfect as ever. that’s the power of a rolex. several clear medium and close-up shots of the watch this episode, too. it’s basically costarring the episode with selleck. just a fantastic device. i love that watch.

he’s sending psychic vibes to the guys the whole time he’s trapped, but they’re not getting them. too high elevation, maybe. he ends up crawling his way out and off the mountain on his own, and makes a bunch of phone calls before even taking a shower. he’s sipping on a beer in his living room and fly lands on his neck. he swats it without thinking and comes to a horrifying realization about the nature of life.

it’s chinese new year in this episode (hey!) and magnum is about to turn forty years old, so TC and rick take him to a vietnamese strip club. magnum walks outside for a minute and meet a gorgeous asian woman, but she leaves. at some point during the night magnum loses his lucky $2 bill with his birthday in the serial number. so his dual mission this episode is to get the lucky bill back and learn more about the beautiful woman.

lots of otis redding this episode. the woman is an investigative journalist who cracks the case basically without magnum’s help.

ep starts out with magnum renting xxx porno movies with TC’s movie rental store membership card. Dana Delaney comes to the island to visit and every possible thing goes wrong. first he gets caught with a sexy client hanging out in his bedroom watching porno movies (for a case!) then he gets beat up and kidnapped and tortured, he keeps blowing it with dana, but they finally meet at the airport at the end and dana sees how disheveled magnum is with black eyes and a suit all torn up and dirty. she invites him to LA at an unspecified future time and leaves

rick is mad at magnum because icepick is in trouble with a hitman for giving a tip to magnum for a case. isn’t icepick in jail? oh ok there was a reality reset. good.

anyway the hitman is found dead and tanaka shows up at the club to arrest rick. rick confesses to the murder right there in front of everybody. magnum goes to TC for help vindicating rick and TC isn’t having any of it. he’s shirtless with jeans and rainbow suspenders fixing his helicopter, and basically tells magnum he’s had enough of magnum using his friends for favors and he’s done with him. but he’s laughing the whole time, he’s not mad, he’s just done helping magnum ever again. but with rick in jail, you know he’s in.

magnum meets carol and she’s fed up with him too. he tricks her into revealing the cops don’t have a murder weapon. he goes straight to rick’s condo and sees them bringing out three AK47s. magnum is more sure than ever that rick is innocent. “he wasn’t killed with an AK!” he shouts at tanaka, not knowing how the guy was killed at all.

the guys visit rick in prison and he’s been beat up recently, he’s not having a good time in there. magnum squeezes him for intel and he’s just super bummed out about being in prison. he goes to icepick’s house again and while he’s there his accountant gets a telegram with a photo of icepick in the trunk of a car with his throat slashed. pretty gruesome for magnum pi.

rick refuses to let the club hire him a top lawyer, and his public defender is planning a trial. do they not know about pleading guilty? why not just plead guilty? rick keeps saying he did it.

the accountant is acting shady so magnum tails him and finds icepick is alive and in hiding in the hawaiian desert. TC and magnum break in splinter cell style with no guns, just knocking out guards. magnum confronts icepick and he doesn’t know anything about rick being in jail. then the accountant busts in with a machinegun shooting at everybody! magnum and tc gunfight him and kill his ass. his dying words are an admission that he was paid bigly by rival mobsters to set the whole thing up.

icepick visits rick in prison and chews him out for taking the fall for the murder. euphoria stole this premise but they had the rick character killed in a shootout lol in this one they pin the murder on a dead guy and rick walks out of prison smiling. but it doesn’t last because literally on the footsteps of city hall (it didn’t look like a jail at all) rick gets slapped with federal gun charges and sent to federal prison. the episode ends with rick in federal prison!

ep starts out with magnum being hunted by multiple armed men in a warehouse filled with unlabeled wooden boxes, it’s a classic warehouse. he sees an opening to escape, a door to the outside. he’s running full tilt but is shot dead before he can reach it. magnum is DEAD. FOR REAL.

next scene he’s walking to the beach bar and it’s very bright. his dead friend mac is there eating ice cream, and he gives magnum the bad news. you’re dead, magnum! it’s over! the show is over. they can’t just let magnum get married to dana delaney and move to california? why kill magnum off of magnum pi, the hit tv series that was still bringing in 15 million viewers per episode.

so magnum is a ghost and he’s haunting robin’s nest. the dogs bark at him but nobody else can see or hear him obviously; he’s dead. they’re all discussing how dead he is. remember: ghosts are real in hawaii so at least he’s a ghost.

fuck, and they end the show with rick in prison doing 30 years omg what a fucking ending. well hold on! turns out before magnum was killed dead, he dropped off evidence that proved that they convicted “rick wright”, and rick isn’t his first name, his first name is orville. carol explains that this technicality not only gets him out of prison that day, but also overturns his convictions (he was convicted off camera between episodes i guess)

magnum is saying goodbye to all his friends by haunting them and listening in on their private conversations when he sees higgins get a letter informing him his memoirs are going to be published. everybody is getting a happy ending except magnum, who is dead.

he’s testing his ghost powers while haunting his wife’s new boyfriend, and finds out he can influence one person on earth, so he uses it to sabotage their relationship. even though he’s dead! nice.

navy intelligence shows up at the estate looking for magnum’s ex wife (the one who faked her own death to become a spy and then left him a second time to go into witness protection), but she’s not there. she’s at the hospital, visiting magnum who has tubes going into his mouth but some heartbeat. magnum isn’t dead! but he’s on the verge of death and his condition is worsening. higgins tantalizes him into waking up by hinting that he may secretly have been robin masters the whole time, then tells him a war story about a guy who everyone thought was gonna die but who woke up suddenly and was fine. nope. magnum is out cold.

magnum concludes his earthly business with a car chase and starts walking into the clouds. he can hear higgins calling for him, but he doesn’t turn back. he continues into the clouds. HE’S DEAD!! THOMAS MAGNUM DIES AT THE END OF SEASON 7
