English Premier League & Other Club Football Thread

Celtic have revenue in line with top championship clubs and wages less than that. To compete with the big boys in the PL long term would be a 10+ year project needing to inject billions.

If Newcastle had been bought by the Saudis and had unlimited money, they would have taken 3+ years to get a sniff of the top 6 in the PL.

There aren’t any sleeping giants. There are clubs with money and without. Could Celtic be successful and on par with richer clubs if their finances were similar? Sure, but you’re taking about billions of dollars by now. Celtic would not be a lock to make it out of the championship right now, to say they could contend with the top 6 in England after just losing to Ferencvaros, a team I’d never heard of, is delusional.

Celtic, who have revenues of ~80 million a year, getting to where Barcelona, revenue of a billion dollars a year, is one of the hottest takes ever produced on this forum. Messi has higher wages than the entire yearly revenue of Celtic.

I wish them the best this year, but the way you get more “popular” is by winning. You look at PSG and the money they’ve spent and thats gotten them to a single CL final. That’s billions with slightly more domestic competition than Celtic. Celtic would have to outspend PSG for the next decade, without the draw of Paris, to be competitive at this level.

You could have had CL money a lot more often if you didn’t lose to random Scandinavian teams in qualifying stages.

27 years of Sky money but in a league where other clubs are getting more of it, have much bigger sponsorship deals and much more revenue from shirt sales etc. does not in any way add up to being an equal of Real/Barca.

It’s impossible for a non-native to understand the depth of feelings about Celtic (and Rangers), as football support is intertwined with political and religious history.

These rants about Arsenal are nothing more than the usual irrational tirade at a bigger club who bought a favourite player. Apparently it’s ok for Celtic to buy players from smaller clubs, though.

Also, AFC are the Irish London club. :shamrock:

You’ve misunderstood.

I was saying that

is some kind of deterministic nonsense based on a primitive formula that fails to take account of the many factors that go into building a club from medium (Celtic) to huge (Real/Barca).

One day you might get to see for yourself how complex and fraught with risk it is (ask Leeds). But probably not. In the meantime though you can always play retrospective fantasy PL in your head, if that’s your thing. I’ll be thinking/watching talking about actual football.

You’re great at name-calling but terrible at 1. knowledge and 2. grasping what people are saying.

  1. AFC get huge support from the local expat Irish population of N London and their descendants (unless they’re not Irish enough for you). I thought everyone knew that. Oh well.

  2. ldo Sky money is the key factor. But you seem to think that getting a slice of that cake guarantees success and it’s a foregone conclusion that with that money Celtic would be able to compete at the top of the PL:

which is a circular argument because you’d only be getting 14 years of CL money by being consistently in the top 4 already.

There’s certainly nothing whatsoever in Celtic’s performances against nobody European teams and teams in a league that’s probably not even Championship quality to suggest they’d ever get there in the first place. I’m sure there are many Rangers fans who have harboured the same delusions about their club too.

Sure, anyone can say “Oh if my club had already been in the PL for 27 years and the CL for 14 we’d be able to compete on more or less equal footing with the best” but it’s completely meaningless and the classic if my auntie had balls she’d be my uncle.

The only club to be in the CL the last 5 seasons in a row is City. Chelsea, United can’t claim that.

International jersey sales are more based on marquee players. If you’re not from the area, people get excited about big name players. You see jerseys with Mbappe, Neymar, Messi, Hazard, De Bruyne etc. Not SPL players.

I would very, very much doubt that.
For example, in the US/Canadian Adidas.com shop…the Celtic kit isnt even listed.
They have their biggest shoes tailored to Juve/United/Arsenal, they haven’t done the same for Celtic.

I can’t find a single link that puts Celtic in the top 10, and they are so, so far behind United in every link I can find on google.

Like, I can get a Celtic kit at the soccer shops in town, they have a bunch at the Scottish pavilion during our folklorama event, but I would just very much doubt they would outsell any of Juve/Arsenal/United/Bayern/Madrid. They’re probably ahead of LA Galaxy/Inter Miami, but LA has a gigantic population and Inter Miami are a brand new team.

Not only that, but the first link my search returned was from 2015 about how Scottish Celtic kids are opting for Real and Barca shirts lol.

Celtic are nowhere near the top 10 in shirt/kit sale from what I’ve found online. Definitely wishcasting from fans there.

Have all your 22 posts been removed? That’s where the worst cases were, not here.

If this was an apology then I’d happily respond in kind.

I can’t quote from posts if I can’t find them after you were banned for god knows what.

Trying to be positive, it’s a good decision not to slate an entire nation for the behaviour of a small minority, so at least we won’t be seeing it again. :+1:

"I won’t make bigoted remarks about entire populations any more, so apologise for calling out my bigotry or you’re a child "

You’re admitting to bigotry and want someone to apologise for calling you a bigot, and they’re the child if they don’t?

LOL
