The point is that the responsibility sits with the social media companies. If they cause harm. They are responsible.
Apple makes software to sell hardware. They have traditionally stayed away from selling information about their users. So far, the only way to monetize social media is by selling information about your users, so not trying harder at social media is on brand for Apple.
To be fair, the circumstances there were that the government wanted to privatize the national telecommunications company, and the balance of power in the Senate was held by a 100 year old hardcore Catholic independent. He used his negotiating power in supporting this privatization to demand this porn filter. Essentially that $A 84 million was a ransom they paid to this grandpa to push through the sale, which brought in $A 50 billion. So it didn’t work not just because doing that would be difficult to impossible, but because nobody ever had the slightest intention of trying to make it work.
The conservative government were absolutely correct to privatize the telco as well, the idea of a government-owned monopoly telco in the present day would be a fucking nightmare.

I am highly suspect of a bunch of technologically illiterate old white men writing laws or tech that will exclude the most technologically savvy generation. Seems like theatre that will do nothing.
I have mixed feelings and will await the legislation, but yeah, I am not exactly confident that this will be at all helpful.

Now I understand the timing of the 2026 pronouncement. Obviously knew this delay was coming and couldn’t resist the opportunity to play victim.
If Trump wins and he becomes Efficiency Czar, there will no longer be any need for this kind of thing. But I think he gets his way as usual here. Maybe there’s an abbreviated delay. The regulators aren’t putting up much resistance.
In fairness, handwringing over the probability of bonking a whale on the head with a hot staging ring in the middle of the ocean is dumb and is worthy of a bit of derision imo.

Also she made her wealth through something totally frivolous. Just writing and performing instant smash hit mega million selling pop songs that have endured for a decade plus.
