Oh, absolutely. I wish we lived in a world where gay rights, gun control, and reproductive rights were settled issues that didn’t divide left and right rather than any one of them being a certain signal of the rest of one’s political leanings, but here we are.
It might be worthy of derision if it was a fair account of the issue. But it’s just Elon being a dick, taking the use of the word “impact” literally when regulators require evaluation of impacts on wildlife, public safety, and the environment. The word gets thrown around a lot so he makes his dumb joke that then gets repeated as though it’s a real FAA thing. It’s not the first time. Last year around this time he said it was sharks that were getting improbably bonked by SpaceX garbage.
I mean the FAA does worry about actual impacts and does estimate risks of shit coming down on people and SpaceX feels picked on because of it. It’s hard to say exactly what % full of shit Elon is, but it’s definitely higher than a normal human.

(TBF, I don’t think it’s about “cutting taxes.” This is the sort of shallow economic analysis now favored by everyone, left and right. Donald Trump is lying because he needs to protect his ego and be elected to stay out of prison, not because of taxes. Elon is lying because he’s ill-informed, has done too many drugs, is under the influence of smarter ex-members of the “Paypal mafia,” and would be able to do whatever he wants in a Trump presidency.)
Yglesias makes the taxes point because anti-tax is the glue that holds the republican coalition together. They lie about things like deficits and foreign policy, etc., when their actual legislation, where they need to pass actual votes in Congress, is about taxes over anything else.
From what I have heard the big sticking point is a state-level water permit for their water deluge system, which is mired in controversy for unclear reasons. There was also a news article falsely alleging that they were discharging a bunch of mercury with that system, hard to figure out what’s going on, but it’s certainly a shame to see progress held up by paperwork.
SpaceX is jerking them around. They’ve been fined twice for unauthorized wastewater releases. Once by Texas and once by the EPA. According to SpaceX the regulators say it’s cool though and they can just keep on doing whatever.

Falsely alleging sounds bad. SpaceX said there was a typo (missing decimal point, apparently) in an entry in a table in the water permit application and implied it wasn’t their mistake. But other pollutants may have been above permissible limits and some things don’t seem to have been measured so
The general problem is Elon thinks he can do whatever he wants, screw everybody else. His new thing is polluting in Memphis.
