Election 2022 Hopium Containment Thread

Newsweek with a big blast of hopium up the snoot

Writers deserve some serious kudos if Boebert loses because of cured ballots

The fucking signature verification thing is so fucking ridiculous. I voted early in person in 2020. And it took me 4 tries to match my signature before the lady turned the computer around and said “try to make it look like this.” This in a state that already requires id.

Especially with electronic signatures.

Continues to amaze me that we accept every state throwing thousands of ballots in the trash in service of preventing nonexistent ballot fraud

Fuck Newsweek. I’m never paying any attention to that site again. I bet this article has been spoonfed to them by American Muckraker’s PAC (which is anti-Boebert and super loose with the facts).

If you’re black, does she turn the monitor around? System working as designed.

It’s no wonder the fountain pen thread went nowhere.

I would not be able to vote in a state that matches signatures. My writing has been terrible all my life and no longer writing at all has completely destroyed my ability to have a consistent signature.

Is this a computer that’s determining if it’s a match by some algorithm, or a person? Either is super problematic.

You should write. Significant evidence that writing on pen and paper helps you process and retain information better than typing something.

Hopium overdrive!

I went to a school that still believed writing left handed was bad and forced me to learn to write right handed. Hated writing all my life and am glad I no longer have to do it. Never wrote to retain info or study and never had issues remembering by just reading.

I watch poker training vids and write out notes yet I continue to forget it all and suck at poker.

Looks like Feinstein may step down and he’ll be named as the replacement.

That’s a significant upgrade, although he might still be to the right of the replacement level senator in an open primary. But he’s not a pushover, so that’s good.

I’m in Ohio.

Schiff could coast to the Senate even in a contested election vs feinstein or padilla. Simplest for everyone if he’s just appointed.

You would still be able to vote. Signature verification is only done for mail-in ballots so you could always vote in person.

First-level verifiers have access to a small set (3?) of your recent signatures the government has on file, basically things like dmv records, tax records, and recent main-in ballot envelopes. They take a very quick glance at your signature and the vast majority just get blasted through at this step.

If there’s any question, they can escalate to a second level of more experienced verifiers (probably permanent elections staff) who have access to all your signatures on file.

If there’s still a problem it moves to curing, where they start emailing you, texting you, and trying to literally call you on the phone to let you know there’s a problem and give you a chance to fix it. Worst case, you can come to the office and prove you are the person whose name is on the envelope, probably sign an affidavit or something. Voters have until a week after the election to complete this. I don’t know the statistics but very few ballots actually end up being discarded for bad signature. There’s even a process for when a married couple accidentally sign each other’s envelopes, which happens a lot more than you would think.

It’s a tedious and time-consuming process for sure, but it’s part of the price we pay (at least here) to appease conservatives and in exchange get easy access to universal no-excuse mail-in voting.

(Edit: above details apply to Maricopa County, other jurisdictions probably similar.)

I know a business professional in OH that’s required to sign all kinds of documents for work and their signature is literally some predetermined number of scribble circles like this

I’d love to see how that would go down at early voting, especially since I’m pretty sure this person is a registered “Republicans are good at the economy, mah tax cuts” GOP.
