One thing that is being reinforced to me is how wide (and also great) of a genre EDM is. I have listened to EDM 75% of my adult music listening roughly and haven’t heard probably half of these. Just absurd.
Also let’s talk live EDM. I have been to EDC and whatever the one in Denver is for NYE for larger scale festivals. There was even a 2 day one in OKC in 2015 that had Bassnectar, Krewella, Pegboard Nerds, Cash Cash and a few recognizable names and have been to maybe 25 live events that were of smaller consequence.
I think maybe I am getting old or something but while I have enjoyed them not many have blown me away tbh. Even in the last few years I have seen Gareth Emery, Armin, BT, Oliver Heldens, Seven Lions and a few I am forgetting in small enough venues to be in the first few rows and while I had fun I can’t say I am aching to go back. I don’t pop molly anymore and I’m old and 20 year olds in head to toe pajamas rolling on molly next to me just doesn’t do it for me anymore. My EDM consumption now is to pass the hours working or having a joint and a couple cocktails on my patio. Old man yelling at clouds confirmed.
I don’t think I’ve heard it I will give it a day this weekend.

The number of dance records that is released per month,in the UK alone, is staggering.
This series is pretty well known. The 1st 2 were classics in the late 90s and still hold up.
Farina is a master of finding moments in between house and hip hop. Stoner house music that is highly accessible yet still sophisticated.
The fundamental problem is by its very nature electronic music doesn’t lend itself to a live show. A rave or club with EDM is different in that you’re hearing all sorts of tracks, hopefully both something new and something classic and familiar, but with a dedicated show of an actual artist you’re hearing variations of their existing work, which doesn’t always work and a lot of times just results in a lesser remix of a track you already love.
Squarepusher ‘performing’ Dark Steering live is a perfect example.
That’s a good point. Watching some guy press buttons to play variations of their existing music isn’t that interesting it turns out and after you aren’t trying to get laid or fucked up on interesting drugs it loses it’s appeal i guess. Also getting older sucks.
It’s because most of these dudes can’t actually play instruments. Too many DJs, not enough players. Can’t be worse than a rap show though.
I saw Skrillex at a festival in 2014, he was the sub headliner playing before either Outkast or Jack White. The first 30-45 minutes were absolutely amazing then it kind of got worse, needed to be an hour set vs 90 minutes.
To be fair there are some mindblowingly good live sets I have seen. That is the vast vast minority though.
Not all hip hop shows are busts. Blackalicious are amazing live. Souls of Mischief with Del was top class. Doseone with Boom Bip was insane.

I don’t mean every act is bad. As a category I think it’s probably the absolute worst though. A lot of times it’s just several dudes yelling over the full released track. Apparently Travis Scott is amazing though.

There are a few exceptions but this is largely true. Dropping layer on layer is what a really good dj does anyway and,hopefully, with more range.
Boards of Canada understood this and all things mysticism hence why they have only performed live a few times in over 30 years.
Kind of unrelated but this conversation reminded me of the first time I heard a really musical turntable routine. This shit is unconscious and musically outclasses a good number of live acts.
I don’t think you’ve posted in the Music Makers thread and regardless I haven’t really got into this too in depth, but I was part of a small forum not much bigger than this one really (it got disbanded which is a whole separate crazy story I’ll tell some other time) which was made up of sound designers and mixing and mastering engineers. And the joke I used to make, which wasn’t actually a joke at all, is that we got into that as as a serious hobby or actual professional career because we were never going to be rock stars making the music we were making (even though a few members of the forum had modest success and even have their own wikipedia pages), but the practice of fucking around with audio in that way lent itself to becoming very, very good at sound design and mixing. Like, I can make your shitty rockband sound good and in perfect time, I just spent 12 hours turning my friend’s broken air conditioner into an electric guitiar/synth lead instrument. But, that’s not exactly something that can be converted to a live show.
Admittedly I was more hardcore about this than the average; I was like, if you can turn your stuff into a live show, then it’s not nearly as fantastic as you’re imagining, and you should probably focus on that aspect. The appeal of electronic music should be ‘there’s no way I can imagine a band playing this live’ not the other way around.
Lol I don’t play an instrument, not really. I tell people I’m a musician and they ask what I play and I say I don’t play anything, my computers do it for me, lol, who actually plays an instrument, like, putting your hands on the actual thing like some sort of peasant?
