I think there’s a significant drop-off from Vegas to Tweekend and they were never able to recreate that debut magic. They still put out some good tracks here and there but I wouldn’t rate any of the other albums highly. It turns out that composing original music with a bunch of layers of interesting counterpoint that contains good groove and phrasing is hard. I mean 808 State is probably my favorite electronic act for this reason, but they just can’t seem to get away from everything having the same tempo and dynamics of a Madonna song.
Did you catch this part on the first Dolores video I posted?
Also, notice that changing the playback speed creates an overwhelming degree of audio artifact. This is fascinating because audio time stretching algorithms aren’t supposed to affect pitch!
Actually no, which video? In that one she’s demonstrating the gear she ends the video talking about how she wants higher sample rates but I must’ve missed that part.
The first one with the rainbow hexagon laser show controller.
I’m chilling with some 1:1 CBD:THC weed in the Pax, working on getting through the post-vax doldrums, and listening to more from this thread.
These are some really good tracks! Haven’t gotten to all of them yet but I don’t think I’ve heard any of them before. I def liked the second and third tracks. Love that house groove.
I feel like I’m losing my mind, I listened to both twice. I was even going to ask if you meant she meant the stuff at the end, when the lets it sustain then decay. If it’s intended or the result of artifacts, it’s sick either way.
Oh you meant she wrote it in the description holy shit lol! I was like, does she say it in the end, I could’ve swore I listened to that entire thing decay but maybe it hypnotized me.
Right. I didn’t listen too closely because I was afraid that maybe it’s a trick and the artifact was gonna be the devil himself speaking to me, but I think what she’s implying is that the overtones are changing based on the speed manipulation or something?
I just listened through these… Thanks for the BT initiation. I used to drive around cranking that Blue Skies song when it was on the radio. Good stuff!
Interesting stuff. That 808 state song definitely has a sound that evokes a certain era and type of music.
That phrase, “in the box,” is one I coincidentally just heard a little while back when I semi-randomly clicked on this vid. Seems like you’re into music production–maybe you’ll find it interesting?
Another vid from the same series with Boris Brejcha. Random interesting (to me) thing about this one. I was watching it and noticed that he’s got some pretty severe burn scars on his face and hands. I looked at his Wikipedia page and he was at the Ramstein air show disaster and got badly burned! Crazy.
Okay, y’all, I had an idea, and I went ahead and did something. It’s still in its early, unformed stages, so don’t be too mean…
Background: I’ve been thinking about this thread and being bummed that there’s not an easy way to do a couple things:
- Find songs of a specific genre, or era, or whatever.
- “Fire and forget” to play a bunch of tracks together.
I was thinking of asking people to put a few words in their posts to make searching the thread a little easier, when a brilliant (it seemed) idea struck:
A YouTube channel, on which I could create playlists. These playlists could:
- Have names! And descriptions!
- Be genre-based!
- Or feeling/idea inspired!
- Or just straight ripped off from some of the posts/posters in this thread!
So I made the channel and made some playlists.
https://www.youtube.com/channel/UCFMOKwyoIbXYUWhH95roYFQ
There are only a handful of things in there right now, but I have some ideas, ranging from mostly solid to kind of fuzzy, for additional stuff.
And I can also take feedback and ideas from posters here and add tracks to playlists, create new playlists, link related channels, etc. Kind of extending the crowdsourcing thing that’s already going on here.
Anyway, I hope it can grow and I hope folks get some value out of it. Let me know your thoughts and ideas!
P.S. I edited the link to the channel into the OP for easy access.
P.P.S. Feel free to put a few words in your posts along with the YT link.
This is one of the vids I watched when I was looking to see his gear setup and definitely noticed that part about him saying in the box sounds cleaner/tighter with less effort. That’s probably true in general, however most of my favorite sounds still seem to come from hardware and it’s not exactly clear to me why. I think that part gets really complicated due to A/D D/A conversion, coloration, artifacts, noise, and such.
That’s wild.
No need to reinvent the wheel
One big time producer that I know still owns and uses a lot of hardware (to what degree I’m not sure) is Calvin Harris. He brings out the heavy artillery classic analogs for this live performance which is so overkill that it’s comical to me. I wonder if they are his personal instruments or backline because I can’t imagine traveling with them. Pictured from our view (as best as I can tell):
Top L: Moog Minimoog Model D
Bot L: Sequential Prophet-5
Top R: Oberhaim OB-Xa
Bot R: Roland Jupiter 8
You can get an idea for how he works and all of the crazy shit in his studio in these vids:
