OSS is not the same as volunteer. Android is developed by Google engineers.
It’s built on top of the Linux kernel, which was created and is often still maintained by people who aren’t paid for their efforts, at least not directly. It’s kinda ridiculous to criticize Mastodon for currently being volunteer-driven when that’s exactly how so many (most?) other widely used OSS projects got started. That’s the foundation of the whole movement. If Mastodon becomes successful there will eventually be lots of well-paid people contributing to it.

No it’s wonderful. Unfortunately I can only ever find it in cans and don’t want to commit to buying that much of it.

I know a bit about chips and a bit more about brains. People have been discussing semi-seriously chips in brains for 40 years, with various labs working on it in various ways. Turns out it’s really fricking hard to do in a useful way. Maybe harder than genuine AI.
