I’m hearing even worse things about Hive’s infrastructure.
The concern that each Mastodon instance is individually installed and that security can vary widely is valid, and also something casual users are going to have a hard time understanding.
But this part:

That’s the very old ‘open source can’t be secure’ argument and we have ~30 years of history showing it to be very wrong. Most of the internet runs on open source software. 70% of mobile device OS’s are based on open source software.

Yeah, and other than having update notifications, it has all of the potential security concerns as Mastodon.
