Faraz has been killing it with his reads this year, so I’m sure this take is going to age well.

Iran / Saudi Arabia / other regressive petro state putting Elon up to this makes a little sense.

He’s not wrong in theory. I used to work for a smaller but public company and got to see a lot of the sausage made. I saw some really dumb business decisions made all in the name of making the quarterly balance sheet look as good as possible for investors. But I’m pretty sure that’s not what’s happening here, lol.

In case you were looking for a tenuous Elmo-SBF connection.

A source who worked closely with Musk for several years described this thinking as core to the billionaire’s pronatalist ideology. “He’s very serious about the idea that your wealth is directly linked to your IQ,” he said. The source, who spoke on the condition of anonymity for this article, also said Musk urged “all the rich men he knew” to have as many children as possible.

Well it’s a parody tweet

Sure, but I have always found it pretty dubious that private companies are suddenly endowed with a Great Wisdom that results in long term thinking overriding short term goals. It’s not like investors in private companies don’t demand results.

I agree with the takes that it’s all part of a strategy to increase profitability. Make users realize they value the service and then crank up the ads or fees or whatever. Simultaneously try to cut labor and other costs, but not sure that’s going to work out great; maybe though.

This is an important question. This whole debacle makes it pretty clear that Elon is not good at any business skill other than building engineering orgs. As I’ve said before, I don’t think he’ll be successful doing that at Twitter (and I don’t think it would save Twitter if he did), but it would be a pretty bad thing if his failure at Twitter ruins the main strength of the rest of his empire.
