I think number of companies is a pretty unilluminating metric here. It probably makes more sense to think of his business empire as Tesla, with a Tesla Space division run by Gwynne Shotwell and a handful of Google X-style side projects. But rather than having a legible corporate structure implementing that, it’s a sort of feudal personal union of all these companies with him as the CEO. It’s the Austro-Hungarian empire of the business world.
