My guess is they settled b/c of some combination of cost to defend, concern about what would come out in discovery, and uncertainty about what damages could be awarded by a jury. I agree that at first glance he might have a hard time showing a lot of damages, but it’s really hard to predict what a jury might do and there is some risk that a jury could believe that it cost him some big licensing deals or something.
Remember when all the law bros were convinced that all of Donnys assets like Trump Tower and his plane were just minutes away from being seized? Pure comedy.

Wat? There was like an entire week of memes on twitter bro. And the cable news outlets were literally breathlessly counting down the hours until Donny had to come up with his $500 million dollar bond.
Also you seem to be misremembering that the reason this didn’t happen is because the judge reduced the bond he was required to post from 5xx milion to 1xx million because reasons. It had nothing to do with an appellate court ruling.
And then he wasn’t able to find an actual bond company to pay it and the one he did find didn’t file the paperwork correctly and didn’t even seem to be good for the bond if they actually had to pay up and the judge said “

I’m kinda sympathetic to Wray, what’s the point of staying and fighting and dealing with death threats when the entire legal system around you has given up? Trump is above the law, the voters are okay with that, there’s no way I’m going to be Joe Serpico here, just retire to Acapulco or some shit.
