The judge tells Trump “incarceration is truly a last resort.”

“Mr. Trump its important you understand the last thing I want to do is put you in jail. You are the former president of the United States and possibly the next president as well,” Judge Juan Merchan says.

McConney says Trump once pretended to fire him in “teaching moment”

Jeffery McConney says he once walked into Trump’s office, and Trump, who was on the phone, told McConney he was fired.

After he got off the phone, Trump told him he was not actually fired, but warned him to “negotiate” his bills.

“He got off the phone call, and he said, ‘You’re not fired but my cash balances went down from last week,’” McConney says.

“‘Negotiate my bills, look at my bills,’” McConney recalls Trump telling him.

“It was a teaching moment. Just because somebody is asking for money negotiate with them, talk to them,” McConney adds.

Trump smiled as McConney told that story, and he laughed so that his shoulders shook when McConney testified “Jeff, you’re fired.”

So we’ve now seen the court find Trump in criminal contempt TEN times with nothing more than inconsequential fines, and the judge is literally saying on the record she is avoiding giving him jail time specifically because he was president. Let’s pull a quote from the Coward Merrick Garland’s statement to the House Judiciary Committee on 9/20/2023:

And our job is to uphold the rule of law.

That means that we apply the same laws to everyone.

There is not one set of laws for the powerful and another for the powerless; one for the rich, and one for the poor; one for Democrats, another for Republicans; or different rules, depending upon one’s race or ethnicity or religion.

Our job is to pursue justice, without fear or favor.

Our job is not to do what is politically convenient.

Total fucking joke. Beyond the ancient lie about there not being different set of laws for the powerful, I don’t think you can come up with a better example of doing something “politically convenient” than a judge saying, “I’m not punishing you with jail like I would others guilty of this crime, because you were POTUS.” I really don’t have faith in this process.

Preserving faith in the rule of law is important. Giving Trump jail for minor infractions with minimal due process, like a summary order for civil contempt, would undermine that. There are good reasons to treat Trump with kid gloves.
