Trans Issues In Sports/Society

Thanks. All I know about prison is pretty much what I learned from watching Oz. So a dose of reality is helpful in my understanding of things.

Thanks! Just thought I’d ask in case I might have a blind spot.

For those wondering, this is the very predictable result of the “just asking questions” mindset. The minute you give these people an inch they will take as much as possible.

Surprise but Caitlyn Jenner is OUT.

Saw Lia Thomas (“the trans swimmer” per media) did end up winning a womens national championship yesterday.

Yeah, I don’t know how I feel about that one.

On one hand, sure we shouldn’t discriminate against transgender people, and they shouldn’t be barred from doing things anyone could do.

On the other hand, a biological male competing against women kinda defeats the purpose of having women’s sports being segregated.

Apparently Lia’s time was only like 9 seconds off Katie Ledecky’s world record for women in this event. Lia competed in the NCAA on the men’s swimming team before she transitioned.

What would happen in combat sports if a transgender female started wrecking female fighters in MMA? I’d find that disturbing.

Trans athletes is probably an issue that costs Democrats vote if it is allowed to become salient.

I’m sorry a biological male playing womens sports is ridiculous and I’d be pretty mad if my kid had to compete against that person.

I’m on the other hand side of this one and I don’t think it’s that tough.

The real tough cases are people like Caster Semenya (intersex people who are just born that way).

“Biological male” is an insensitive term meant to invalidate trans women and that also is insensitive to the actual biology of sex and gender, which is murky at best.

I’m not sure how long Lia has been out as a woman, but I do think there’s a reasonable argument for trans women to be living as women and on hormone therapy for like 2-3 years before getting to compete in men’s athletics, but the details aren’t something that should be settled by cis dudes.

If I’m not mistaken, that “reasonable argument” relies heavily on the premise that after a couple of years of hormone replacement the advantage of being born male is lost. Is that correct?

I have found that pretty hard to swallow and the studies I’ve seen on the topic (it has been a while, so maybe there is some new stuff) have not been that convincing, imo.

this case doesn’t seem tough to me at all

the whole point of sports at the olympic level is to celebrate people who are essentially all freaks. but if they’re freaky outside of some extremely narrow parameters then we suddenly don’t think they get to play? seems dumb IYAM

Well, I think some people want to pretend that we’re celebrating nothing but hard work and training, but obviously that’s bullshit.

That’s where I land on that. But I guess I have an easier time seeing the other side.

Part of the problem is that it is difficult to tell if someone like that is doping on T.

I recall seeing some studies that most of the strength advantage is lost after a couple years, but it’s been a while since I fought this battle. I suppose there’s more of an issue where limb length is a substantial part of the advantage relative to raw strength, and swimming and basketball could be such sports.

Do you support desegregation?

This is a very very very bad issue for democrats.

Up there with letting people shoot up and smoke crack on the sidewalk.

Any dem who doesn’t come out against trans athletes is a moron.

You can be a trans athlete but you have to complete against your own genotype.
