Also Killer Mike ad incredible of course
Idk, Bloomberg’s strat is basically what Rudy tried in 2008, but with more money. I don’t see him picking up any real momentum but I could be wrong.
I’m registered in New York and am doing the same.
But let’s be civil and all
I swear to god if I was running his campaign I’d be inclined to threaten the DNC right fucking now if they try to fuck him again, he’ll run as an independent. Not sure what effect this would have. It would either split the vote between Sanders and (Biden?) giving Trump a landslide victory, OR… It would split the vote between Trump and Biden giving Sanders the presidency. Sanders voters aren’t going anywhere and every Dem fed up with the establishment who doesn’t like Biden would stick with him. And I still say Sanders gets much of the Trump voting anti establishment crowd that has figured out by now he has only grown the Swamp, instead of drained it
How preposterous would this be? Does it help Trump? Or make it harder for him as he’d now have a battle on two fronts and all Bernie would have to do is beat Biden, which he’s already polling better than?
Bret Stephens has to be the laziest person making mid 6 figures in America
I mean to be fair, this kind of nails it:
But it also goes to the heart of what the Bernie Bros are really about. As they see it, ordinary civility isn’t a virtue. It’s a ruse by which those with power manipulate and marginalize those without. Democrats like Joe Biden who play by the rules of civility and bipartisanship aren’t just falling prey to the insidious manipulation. They are perpetrating and legitimizing it. No wonder nearly half of Sanders’s supporters won’t commit to or are unsure about voting for the Democratic nominee in the event it isn’t Bernie, according to a recent poll. Why bother voting for Oligarchy Lite?
IMO if Bernie wins the popular vote but loses the primary, he absolutely should run Independent. That would actually make Biden the third-party candidate, the one you vote for if you’re throwing your vote away for spite. And yeah there might be enough R voters who’d vote Bernie to compensate for the Biden voters.
Maybe it’s far-fetched, but if there were polls showing that the majority of people planned to vote for Bernie the Independent, then anyone who cares more about beating Trump than electing Biden would have to vote Bernie. The only people who would still vote Biden would be the Never-Berners, but I think they’d be outnumbered by the combination of:
- People who typically don’t vote but would show up for Bernie.
- Anti-establishment types who hate both parties.
- Red voters who like Bernie more than Trump.
Plus take into account what would happen if Bernie didn’t run Independent: tons of people, pissed at their state nominating Biden despite the popular vote going to Bernie, would stay home. So by running (I), Bernie wouldn’t be stealing as many Biden votes as it may seem.
Bernie has basically no path to victory as an independent. There’s a reason why he’s tried to get the Democratic party nomination in 2016 and 2020 even though he’s never really wanted to be a democrat.
-
Ballot access. As an independent candidate he has to collect signatures and pay filing fees in order to appear on the ballot. Each state has different rules about the amount of signatures needed, who can collect them, and the deadline to file (some filing deadlines are before the national convention). A good nationwide organization that can properly meet all of the requirements is a big lift and it takes a lot of time, $, and resources.
-
Electoral college - if no one wins a majority in the electoral college (imo, the most likely outcome in a Biden/Sanders/Trump), the vote goes to the House of Representatives. Each State delegation has one vote and the winner is whoever gets 26 votes. Trump would likely be favored here for the same reason Rs run the Senate (they control lots of small population states), and independent Bernie probably has no shot b/c at the end of the day, parties gonna party.
If Bernie gets the majority of delegates and gets ratfucked the Democrats will lose anyway. Might as well vote with your conscience and vote Bernie.
This is like Trump with the Republicans. They did everything they could to force a brokered convention but they knew going against the primary results would be suicide.
Seriously, does anybody in the Democratic Party remember what happened when the delegates got behind Hubert H. Humphrey despite him not entering a single primary in 1968? He got trounced by Nixon.
I think the fears of a convention rat fucking for Bernie are overblown. The Dems are way to risk averse. Some of them might prefer trump over Bernie in their heart of hearts but that’s really different than being the guy who made it happen. That guy wears that around his neck like a burning tire for the rest of his life.
Are we still “strategically voting” for Biden or Blombito in this scenario? Fuck that.
But Joe is the least civil candidate by a wide margin.
And becomes a lobbyist or consultant. Or, like Debbie Wasserman Shultz, they keep winning elections anyway.
Dude read the article that was linked above
Have a Facebook friend that believes it.
Normally I’d point out the hypocrisy but I argue with him so much I let this one go.
Wait… Is the “anyone” you’re referring to all the establishment Dems that drone on about taking a unity pledge except if it’s Bernie?
