What the hell are bonus delegates? What do they have to do with sharing a primary date?

Bonus Delegates

Summary: An estimated 211 bonus delegates will be allocated to locations holding their 2020 contest in April or later. This increases the number of total delegates needed to win the Democratic nomination.

The Democratic Party uses bonus delegates to reward any location* that schedules its nominating contest later in the calendar. A 10% bonus goes to states that will hold their contest in April, 2020, with 20% awarded to those that wait until May or June. Separately, states that hold their primary after March 24th can get a 15% bonus for participating in a ‘regional cluster’ - basically holding their event on the same date as at least two neighboring states (as defined by the party rules).

The bonuses are additive. For example, if a state holds its primary in April and participates in a regional cluster it would receive a 25% bonus (10% + 15%). The bonus percentage is then multiplied by the Total Base Delegates** that the state was originally allocated to get the bonus delegates.

So bribing states to not piss off Iowa and New Hampshire, basically.

Yeah, that’s what I understood - or more properly, they were trying to get to Iowa/NH/Nevada whoever the fuck else to avoid a neverending game of oneupmanship - otherwise we’d be starting the 2024 primary next week, I guess. Or, you know, just run the election like a normal person would, and everyone goes to the polls over 48 hrs. the first week in march and we’re done and moving on to the real election in November. And I wouldn’t have to listen to another braindead idiot in assknuckle Iowa worried about his/her angst about her aunt/uncles bait shop going tits up because the Chinese stole all their jerbs, or something.

Showed this to my mom who is a huge Warren supporter. She just said this is the best ad she’s ever seen.

She also said she’s probably gonna vote for Bernie now. Like she always liked Bernie but I think this ad just legit pushed her from Warren to Bernie in the primary.

Powerful as fuck.

Fuck. If Trump gets re-elected it’s the beginning of the end of this country and there will be so much more suffering. But if they ratfuck Bernie I’m going to be so unbelievably pissed off.

I wish I had much more confidence in these words.

I’m mildly biased here, but this is my favorite political ad of all time:

I mean, I’m fine with him getting in the debate. He’s certainly polling well enough. From a practical standpoint I think he takes some Biden voters with additional exposure, but more importantly I think most of Pete’s contingency would go to him once Pete fully flames out.

“Her people” is a guy who doesn’t work for her, but merely endorsed her a while back. Also, it’s probably good strategically for her and Bernie if he’s there, gives them an easy target for their messaging.

Also also, the PCCC, the organization founded by the guy who said Bloomberg should be included, endorsed a number of lefty candidates in 2018, including Rashida Tlaib, Cynthia Nixon, and literal communist Kaniela Ing. The entire Squad is endorsed by them this year.

But you know, Warren’s a neoliberal shill, so this dude asking for Bloomberg to be included proves that she loves billionaires and serves them faithfully.

While it is of course bullshit for the rules to be changed to get Bloomberg in the debates, that’s some serious low hanging fruit for Bernie.

Yeah I’m not sure this is bad for him.

  1. Changing the rules is obviously LOL, but the rule was bad and poorly thought out
  2. Bernie is losing a much lower percentage of supporters to Bloomer than other candidates
  3. Changing rules in the middle of the process is an easy attack point
  4. Having Bloomer there buying his way on the stage is probably +EV for Bernie to point out how the system is rigged to favor the rich.

Not that it matters because I’m in New York, but if Bernie wins the majority of the votes and he isn’t the nominee, I won’t be voting.
