Yeah, this is the most important consideration.
Finally got into it with my sister last night, after years of not talking politics with her. I think we made it through almost the entire trump administration without having it out. My sister is not stupid, she has 2 degrees. Her husband is an ultra-deplorable.

She got mad and sent me a message about “it’s not fair to lump socialists and christians together. socialist governments have killed millions of people” Besides completely missing the point of the tweet, it’s just dumb. I responded that she’s smart enough to know that’s a bullshit fallacy and a bog standard fox news talking point.
She goes “Have you really read anything from Eastern Europe from countries that were dominated by socialism? Have you read the gulag archipelago?”
to which I responded “I am unable to continue this conversation civilly, and I respect and care about you, so I will not continue this.”
To which she responded that I’ll “never grow as a person” if I “deflect” and refuse to engage people who don’t have my beliefs. Oh, fighting words. I responded saying that I am perfectly fine talking to people who disagree with me, and the reason I did not want to continue the conversation is because I did not know how to do it without talking to her like she’s a moron. I told her if she honestly believes that early 20th century soviet russia bears any resemblance to modern democratic socialism, and giving healthcare to people will lead us down a dark path to literal gulags, then that’s exactly what she is.
No response. I probably went too far but jfc I’m sick of this. Her dirtbag husband is gonna uproot their entire family and move to texas, because california is something something liberal hellhole. It’s a joke. I’m so shocked and upset she’s bought into this. I blame the husband, he and his family are real dyed in the wool deplorables and she’s just gone along with it hook line and sinker.

They always want to challenge you because they’re so sure they know something you don’t. It never occurs to them it might be the other way around.
I generally just leave my family alone and take it out on Facebook friends who aren’t really friends and their friends who I don’t know at all.

I think I have an unfair advantage on this point. No one I am close to is going to challenge me in a political argument because they know I’m smart and that politics is my area of relative academic expertise.

i had to cut off communication with my deplorable after he told me i haven’t outgrown the naive belief that everyone is equal, and sent me a gun to protect myself against blm. there was a lot more to it than just this, and i just can’t talk to him anymore. every conversation over last 8 months was getting worse and worse. even if he died tomorrow, i’d be regretful that my last memory will be this, rather than pre-pandemic civility. he’s not a denier, but it screwed up everything in the head.

yea I didn’t even entertain that shit. I was aware, but it’s such a pointless road to go down. That’s the thing with them. They’re so fantastically wrong on almost every viewpoint they hold that you could probably have enough to write a strong thesis paper before you’re done dismantling it all.
Like, I could have shut down her entire initial response of “socialists have killed millions of people” by simply saying “So have christians.” But no, I wanted to be “right” and show her she was “wrong.” It’s a classic mistake most liberals make. But because I respected her and care about her, there’s an instinct to try to correct. But you cannot do that with these people. I’ve said for a few years now the only recourse against trumpists is to humiliate, shame, and insult. I didn’t want to be like that with her so we just didn’t ever talk politics.

This is something that probably deserves its own thread, but the liberal reaction is–or should be–that 1/6 is our 9/11, an deniable signal that we face an existential threat and the fate of democracy relies on how we react and mobilize to face that threat.

The guy who after the inauguration admitted I was right and he was wrong is all the way back to believing in the same Q Anon stuff, apparently thinks Trump is coming back in March because why did Biden fly on a private jet or something. After he told me “God will prevail” I asked him if he believes God is in control and he said yes. So I said “Sounds like God chose Biden.”
Naturally it ended with him calling me a pedophile.
